Stolen Car thread

This is a thread to discuss stolen and lost cars.

While thefts can be traumatizing, some can end up being humorous. Some stories may even end up being educational. In reading about Johnny's misfortune I was reminded of my loss of a 1980 Buick Century. At the time it was stolen it was 12 years old and a real piece of crap. It only had liability insurance and at the time I thought it was a real set back. I had bought it for 500 dollars to replace a 1976 Subaru GL wagon that I had lost while delivering pizzas (well... I didn't really lose it... an idiot hit me head on while I was waiting at a stoplight).
One morning I went out to my parking space and the car was gone. I used to leave a key under the floor mat for some reason. I guess some kids were car prowling and got lucky.
I called the police and was told that there was nothing that they could do except take the car's information and keep an eye out for it. At first I was upset that they wouldn't even send out an officer to check it out. It occurred to me later that it would have done no good to send an officer... there was nothing there left to investigate. The car was gone. I was told on the phone by the police that because of the popularity of that car with local gangs it most likely would not turn up whole but might be chopped up and sold throughout the country. So that day I started looking for a replacement car. I found a 84 Subaru 4wd SW for about 600.00 that was in decent shape for what I needed. I was happy because in my mind I had “traded up.”
Two weeks later the police called and said that they found my car. Could I come out to the location and pick it up? I asked if it was drivable, and was told it appeared to be. The keys were not in it but the ignition was not punched and it just looked like one of the small wing windows had been busted to get in. So I had my dad drive me to the location thinking he might have to tow me somewhere to have the car repaired. When we got there I was surprised to find it in the parking lot of an apartment building. The police said that according to the residents of the building it had been there for 2 weeks, since the morning I lost it! When I got in to start it, it started right up! I usually took about 3 minutes each morning to get it running. When I looked at the gas gauge, it was full! I never had more than ¼ of a tank of gas in the damn thing. I got out and checked the oil and it was clean and full. I had checked it the day before and it was dirty and down a quart. So… the thieves had tuned it, changed the oil and filled the gas tank. I sat the laughing out loud while the cops just scratched their heads wondering what was so funny. I gave the car to my little sister who was having some hard times of her own and she drove it for about 8 more years.

Mitch - are you trying to say that "Crime does Pay?"

Well, at least in this situation any way.
