R&D help

I think this board may need a R&D forum for R&D purposes.

I am in the process of replacing the AC controls on the SVX with a touch screen panel. I got the panel from a HP jordana 420. I will use the screen for video input as well. Are there any electronic/engineers who has any working knowledge on the LCD panels and how they work? I know the LCD panels uses high voltage AC current to power it up and another set of wires for image. Do I need a separate image processor? How do I feed a composite image into the LCD and how do i feed a RGB image into the screen.

Thanks

Lwin

aside from novelty, why would you want to do that? it could be dangerous, because you'd have to take your eyes off the road to change a setting. with the buttons, you can do it "by feel" without looking down. i don't wanna come down on your idea, but it could also be expensive if it breaks and you have to replace it. i'm clumsy - i'd have something jammed through that LCD screen in no time

Wink

I thought the "touch-screen" fad died along with the Buick Reatta. A welcome demise in my opinion.

Ron.

i just read an old car magazine article yesterday about the Reatta in my "office" and they really blasted the instrument cluster controls and the touch screen. quote "The Reatta's leather and suede seats are inviting. But the instrument panel - and the fiddly CRT, in particular - invite only violence." Automobile, Feb '88. they go on and on about it. if its Lwin's dream to have it, though, good luck - it should be a challenge. i'm sure it will "react" quicker to touch than the Reatta's. electronics have improved a bit since then

The setup can vary between lcd modules, but generally coming off a composite/component source, you're going to need something to do A->d conversion, since LCD's think in terms of which subpixel to turn on or off, rather than scanning over the whole screen at 60hz.

In your jornada, the screen was probably run digitally, with something like a DVI interface, which makes running an lcd a lot easier, but gives you the headaches of dealing with DVI.

There are websites (industriallcds i think, amoung others?) that will sell (pretty cheap) ready-to-use lcds with the necessary gear to take an analog in.

Of course, IANAEE (I am not an Electrical Engineer) so, take with a grain of salt...

I am looking at a completely different setup as well. However I need a 9.5cm x 7.5 cm. screen for my purposes which are hard to find.

Great Idea!

I actually started to look at this using an entire Compaq Handheld. Mounted on the steering wheel of a race car (no air bag!). In addition to all engine instruments it would control anything with a switch through the serial port (4 wires) I had planned on an HTML based display with progressive screens for engine parameters (pressures, temps, rpms) With an integral SHIFT light when the preprogramed rev was reached. Of course you'd receive any warnings. AC, radio, cruise, windows, locks, seats, Even engine running parameters could be changed on the fly...

Yet another thing I'm never gonna do. But if anyone else want's to do this the new handhelds are USB devices and even easier to work with.

Colin, try the toshiba/audiovox handheld. that's cheap and comes with 2 imput options. as for the 400mhz devices, they are way too expensive at this time.

Compaq

That's the best thing about using the whole device... Build the cradle into the car. When you're in the car, use it as a controller, when not, use the PPC normally. Then you're not giving anything up. Last year MS was trying to do something like this with the auto PC. I'm not sure where that went.

Now you've got me thinkin again, dangnabit

Even use it like a key, log into your car, no ppc, car no start. (we'll be there soon enough)
