Question Steering Problem (Lack of Boost)

Recently I developed a steering problem on my `92 LS-L w/48k mi. I get a binding feel and sqeeling noise when I make a turn from full stop or take the steering wheel to a left or right extreme when parking or making a U-turn. Once the car is moving the steering is responsive, with no binding or issues at city and highway driving speeds. One local shop told me I need a new PS pump, but if that were the case wouldn't I experience a lack of steering assist at all times?

Go to the personal lockers section o fthe site, then the how-to locker and look for the power steering O-ring fix article and pictures.
Definitely perform that fix before you even think about a new steering rack.

If the steering is still bad I'll trade you my 92 with 163k for yours. I don't have a steering problem.

Looked at it

Printed that fix and bought the O-rings. But I just wanted to confirm if anyone else had the same symtoms and had a fix. I do not plan to do the work myself and I am sure the cost to put the O-rings on will almost equal the cost of a PS pump swap.

It would be a good idea to put new fluid in as well after emptying the tank and replacing the o-ring.

Question So is it the O-rings??

I'm not really getting the answer I'm looking for here...So is it the consensus opinion of the both of you that this is the common O-ring problem? Because what I am trying to determine is if it is the o-ring problem, PS-Pump faliure, Steering Rack, etc.

It's just a little hard to diagnose it thru the ether...

It COULD be the pump, it COULD be the o-ring, it COULD be just old fluid.

If you already have the o-ring, it takes 15-20 minutes to find out and very little $$$ and effort if you do it yourself. If it fixes it, great, if it doesn't, maybe it's the pump. It's a quick and easy way to narrow down the problem.

You also didn't mention the colour/condition of the fluid or whether there's any leakage from anywhere, or if you're losing fluid.

When I bought my SVX, it was hard to steer at slow speeds, the steering wheel surged when I turned it at very slow speeds, and there was some PS fluid that was leaking below the storage tank. The fluid was not very good either.

The O ring was just changed at the 10th Anniversary Meet, and it has worked great after that. I put in new fluid to fill the tank afterwards, and will change it again in a week or so. This is a very common problem with the SVX. Many people have gone to a dealer, and the tell them that they need a new PS pump ($450.00) and after it is replaced it still does the same thing. Others have asked on this forum, and have changed the O ring and have solved the problem, and have never had to repalace the pump.

Good luck and I hope this has helped you decide whtat to do. It is very easy to do it yourself, so try it, and see if it solves the problem.

I'd be willing to go out on a limb and say you just need to change the o-ring. If I were a little closer, I'd come over and do it for you, just to save you the money/headaches of taking it to a dealer. It is sooooooo simple to do that even the "mechanically challenged" could do it. I hate to see anyone pay dealer labor rates for such a simple fix, and one they'll probably balk at doing. Best o' luck.

The squealing noise is typical of a loose drive belt, especially if it does it when full lock is applied. Check it first.
