? Broken Koni insert

I just developed a nasty clunky sound in my passenger rear suspension area. Checked the exhaust & tightened it up but that didn't make any difference.

I have Koni inserts on all 4 corners and am wondering what the effect will be if I just replace one corner with an OEM strut.

I haven't had it up on a lift yet, but want to be prepared for the eventuality.

I really want to go to the 25th meet and time is of the essence.

Re: ? Broken Koni insert

Struts usually start clunking when all the fluid has leaked out. Check if the strut is oily and dirty. You don't need a hoist, just jack it up and take off the wheel.
I've driven on a strut with no oil at all left in it with no problems at all, other than the noise. Driving on one stock strut may handle a little strangely but should be otherwise safe.

Re: ? Broken Koni insert

Thanks Blacky. Hopefully the snow / sleet / & rain will stop here tomorrow so I can get a look at it.

Just spoke to Koni & they say a clunk usually points to a strut mount. Do you know if you can see these from the wheel well or do I need to access from the rear seat?

Guess what Subaru no longer has, right rear strut mounts!

Re: ? Broken Koni insert

I have Koni's on mine - I remember some article from Koni stating "lifetime warranty" ...... anyone else have any paper trail regarding this statement?.

Re: ? Broken Koni insert

I spoke to Koni Canada / USA today. If the insert fails they will rebuild it at their facility in USA. You have to ship it to them for assessment after which they do the repair. It must be returned with the bill of sale and is only warranted to the original purchaser.

If they deem it not warranty you have the option of paying for a rebuild.

Not sure how it works outside of NA.

Rear strut mounts have a history of corrosion and failure. Best visual indicator is the car will ride low in the back...

Re: ? Broken Koni insert

Got a mechanic friend of mine to help diagnose. Ordered a used top mount off of eBay yesterday.

Re: ? Broken Koni insert

Well, turns out that my top mount was just fine.

We noticed that the bushing in the rear stabilizer bar was shot. So I ordered a new bushings and lateral links to install at the same time as the top mount.

After doing the bushings no more clunking.

Now I have a rare, nice new top mount for a paper weight.
