Re: the ugly wood dash is killing me!

I took all the woodgrain out of mine, and changed it to the grey plastic. I cant stand the 92 woodgrain, it looks so cheesy and crappy. If I could get my hands on 93+ woodgrain it would be a different story.

Re: the ugly wood dash is killing me!

Its all pretty easy to get off, a few tricks in some spots, but its straight forward mostly.

Hardest part is the lighter surround, and the climate control, you wont have the writing on there anymore if you sand it.

If you want some help in detail, you can call me. Ive taken it all off already. PM me if you do, and ill reply with my number.

I agree that the 92 supposed woodgrain is ugly, but every painted dash job I have seen is horrendous and absolutely looks just that---cheap paint.

I changed my driver 92 woodgrain for the much better 96 woodgrain and it looks great.

(Note to self-add a car to list of cars from here never to buy even if the opportunity comes up-- )

My friend that has a new Rolls-Royce has the same problem... the ugly wood looking dash. He would be real interested in finding a viable solution to get rid of that "embarrassing" situation. He says even when people simply walk by where he is parked, they cannot stop staring at his car! He is sure that the "pathetic" wood dash is what they are all staring at. He is already leaning toward the "painting it gray" as the best way to go. He suggested maybe do it with a brush to get the brush strokes look... Hope we can put our heads together and come up with the best way to paint it.

It would solve all our problems and my friend's problem as well!!!

Thanks everyone for your input. Another of the many mountains we can climb when we all work together!

Re: the ugly wood dash is killing me!

Ugh. Just buy a dash kit and paint that. The paint you've chosen looks horrible.
I really hope you like it. It would be a shame to have second thoughts after painting the panels, is all I'm saying.

Personally I think an aluminum dash kit looks best, second to a lighter woodgrain, my 92 color being 3rd.

Re: the ugly wood dash is killing me!

The camera's flash brings out ALL the metallic. Sure it looks much better in regular daylight.

And to the rols royce guy....disassemble eerything, get the wood out, and take it to a good body shop to be painted. Anything less than that is simply foolish

Re: the ugly wood dash is killing me!

The only thing that's kept me from pulling all my wood dash pieces and painting them semi-gloss black is knowing there's no way to paint the A/C surround and end up with factory quality, back-lit text.

I don't totally hate the wood, but I'm really not a fan. Especially since it's plastic. When it was new, perhaps it looked like real wood, but over the years mine's faded enough to look fake. Or maybe it's just always looked that way.

Shame on Subaru! I bet for just a hundred bucks or so more in build cost, they could have put real wood in the car and actually up-classed the interior. For a car that MSRP'd for $33k in 1992, real wood should have been included!
