Re: EGR temp sensor cleaned

That ones easy, it just looks like the top of a bolt with wire to it. The only other place it would be if not in the pic is the side of the EGR itself.

If you want to do the hack shortcut way of cleaning those passages, just remove the EGR piping or temp sensor if you find it and spray brakeleen into it while revving the engine so it doesnt stall. Just keep in mind the gook and grit thats in there will be spat into the engine, so if you like your car I would just do it the right way.

Have you looked at the online manual yet?

Re: EGR temp sensor cleaned

Forgive the ignorance here....but just what exactly does the EGR valve/temp sensor/system do anyway?

What does it mean that those pipes/sensor are all gooped up, where did that stuff come from...I can't imagine the exhaust being that oily...does it mean that the system is back-feeding from the crankcase?

Re: EGR temp sensor cleaned

Generally speaking, the EGR system basically recycles engine exhaust, which is essentially inert, back into the engine combustion chamber to take up space, allowing the air/fuel charge to be smaller and allowing better fuel mileage under low to medium engine load.

The goop is a normal by-product of combustion chamber soot and burnt off oil that is recycled thru piping that does not reach a high enough temperature for it to be burned "dry", it just collects over eons of engine operation and eventually impedes the exhaust flow past the temp sensor. Then the ECU thinks theres a problem with the EGR valve itself and kicks on the engine light, as in my case.
