Window tinting - pics inside

I had the windows tinted recently using 20% tinting (NM legal). I'm including couple of pics in case others are interested in doing something similar. Check with your local ordinances before doing tinting on the front two windows Remember, there are state law vs local county law when it comes to tinting.

Tinting a SVX can be an expensive proposition due to too many curved windows. The trick is to find a shop that never did one and gives you a quote based on a computer listing. You gotta make sure that you hold them to it after they work on the car and the worker is totally wrung out and pissed off!

The wheels are MB Motoring from Discount Tires.

Cheers.

I hate tints, but I'd be lying if I said they didn't make your car look awesome. Here in Jersey, we just get tickets. Lots and lots of tickets.

Re: Window tinting - pics inside

I've been thinking about doing mine and always wondered how much of a butt cramp it would be. I used to install tint but only go my numbers up to around 60-75 vehicles unlike many who've done a few hundred professionally.

It looks sooooo awesome on the SVX though, it's almost essential...

Re: Window tinting - pics inside

After tinting one of my SVX's I've realized that the car looks better wtihout (or with very minimal) tint.

It hides the window-in-window and you don't get the full effect of the quality of the car.

I think 20% would be hell to see through at night.....

Re: Window tinting - pics inside

I like it. And I've seen it on the Claret color, so I plan to have it done.

I got an estimate of $220, but how does that compare to what you paid to have it done, and how long did it have to stay for the job?

I paid $130 (got a lifetime warranty) and sat there for 4+ hours.

But it was because the guy kept cleaning the glass to get the dirt out of the weather stripping.

Re: Window tinting - pics inside

I think I paid around $220 and the guy did an OK job. My other vehicles got the higher quality treatment at a different location but that quote came in at around $400.

Tints around here (at 7,000' elev) is just about mandatory due to the sun abuse on the leather and the dark interior. In retrospect, I should have probably gone with 30% but the heat rejection on the 20% was higher and that's what I was after.

This particular color isn't my favorite but on this car, not sure what else would work with a black/white car. It does taking some getting used to driving at night however!

Cheers.

Re: Window tinting - pics inside

Cool tint. I think tint looks especially nice on a pearly.

I think I paid about 150 for mine, had it a couple of years and not a hint of it going purple (no ammonia windex for me), no bubbles, good edges. I didnt do it for looks - tint helps keep the car cooler and keeps the sun from coming in the side windows around my sunglasses to give me a headache.

I disagree with the "find someone clueless" advice - I found someone who had worked on SVXs before, liked the challenge and was a perfectionist. He said the SVX isnt as tricky as it first appears, that cars with the wrap-around rear windshields are more of a PITA. He cleaned the grit out of the window seals since our cars have a rep for scratching tint. I found the shop I wanted (Spokane Sunscreen) on http://www.tintdude.com/ they're real tint snobs there.

Re: Window tinting - pics inside

I paid $247 for mine, I got a lifetime warranty and the guy did a completely professional job throughout. I kept the tint legal by going 50% all the way around and then 70% on the roll-down portions of the front windows. (the upper portion is the darker 50%)

The window-in-a-window is still quite noticeable and doesn't look nearly as dorky as a tint-less one. IMHO the tint cleaned up the whole car and gave it a sleeker profile.

Re: Window tinting - pics inside

very nice job G!

I'm surprised at the lower cost of tinting for some of you. You'd think a sunny place like NM would have a more competitive price for window tinting but not for the SVX it seems.

After comparing three tint companies and their products, this is truly a "get what you pay for" kind of a deal. The higher quality tint film has no distortion and the built in metallic stuff really looks great - but at a higher cost. Do your research before selecting a tint company!

Cheers.

Re: Window tinting - pics inside

I paid over $300 for mine because the guy had done a few before.
I should have went somewhere else because of his attitude about doing it.
He did a crappy job and pulled the headliner down in the back and broke the clips holding it

But all black is just plain sexy imho

Re: Window tinting - pics inside

I thought this might help for those who are curious:

I want to get mine done, but I'm very weary about the rear window. I have had it done in the past where it bubbled on the rear window after using the rear defroster a few times, and it made the rear window completely unusable.

Hmm, that's not encouraging....

Excellent table BTW. Thanks.
