steering/wiring problems
having problems with steering and electrical at low speeds. ill be in a parkiing lot and pull my car out onlky when i turn the wheel to a hard right, the power steering disengages, car cuts out power for a brief 1/4 second and my abs, steering, power and airbag light come on. the car also stutters/jumps from the rear right like a cv joint would do..baffled, i was thinking it might be the clockspring?

Does the same belt that powers the p/s also power the alternator? Too lazy to go look at the moment. If yes, the belt is slipping. If no the crankshaft pulley is slipping - probably.

no i dont think its a belt problem, that wouldnt cause all those lights to come on would it . i've tightened the belt a number of times and the teeth are fine, belts have only 3k on them, its a seperate system as well what about the clockspring, do subaru's have one, my ford did

Yes, I do believe it's either the belt or the dampener slipping. The lights come on just as they would when you first turn the key on and the engine isn't running, right? No alternator output = lights on. Slippage = no alternator output.
Yes. there is a 'clockspring' but it only serves the horn, cruise control and SRS. It has absolutely nothing to do with the power steering on the SVX or Fords. (yes, I'm positive, check my cert's)

DO you have an owners manual? It may state in that its no more then 1/4 inch deflection when pushed against with your thumb, thats pretty much the standard.
nipper Check any adjustment idler pullies and make sure they spin free. |

If you look closely at the crank pulley (dampener) you'll see it has a center hub and a separate sheave (pulley) section. They are held together by a band of rubber between them. Make a chalk or crayon mark across the two pieces, start the car and do whatever it is you do to make the problem occur. Then shut the engine off and check the chalk marks. If they are no longer in alignment you'll need a new dampener. There are a number of pics on this site of what the dampener looks like when it separates, use the search feature.
