Need Opinions

I received some other photos of the 951, now of the inside. It needs both front seats recovered, the carpet fixed or replaced, the rear hatch carpet replaced, some minor dash cracks (all 944/951 seem to have them to an extent), in addition to the aformentioned A/C and clutch issues. The clutch is around $1200 or less depending on Tom's generoisty, and the A/C was quoted at around $400 plus labor to install. We started at $8k and agreed at $7k. The raw power of this car is intoxicating, but i'm beginning to realize it's going to cost me another $3-4k to get this car right, and it has 155,000 or so miles on it. I love the front with the vented nose and the front splitter, but am I getting over my head? I can find another 951, but they seem to be running around $9-14k depending on miles and condition. This one has the advantage of all the underhood mods being done. I'm thinking if the clutch was done I'd feel better, but I doubt he's going to redo the clutch and sell me the car for $7k. Any thoughts?

coverlay dash cover ~$75

MOMO seats $335 x 2

front,rear,cargo mats ~$300

clutch ... ?

A/C ... ?

seems like all the hard stuff is done. don't know how hard or pricey the clutch will be, but the A/C could be rough on your knuckles and wallet.

Seems like they're a lot of superficial issues with the car Dan. I wouldn't let that deter you, but looks like Landshark is a wealth of info on replacement items.

Definitely post the pics you received!

I personally believe in buying a car that does not need work. You will end up spending less money in the long run. Clutch is going to be pricey, dash is going to be pricey (unless you going with the plastic cover), and dents and dings are never cheap.

There are plenty of 951's around in that price range in better condition. I would say that spending closer to $10k and getting one in great condition is much better than getting one for $7k in that condition. I can give you a few leads on cars if you want. I have been looking too.

As for the dash, have you seen the custom-stitched vinyl or leather cover that the guy in MI is doing? Under $200 for the materials, probably a couple of hundred for the install.

The worst part of the clutch is the labor time. I believe you have to drop the rear-mounted transaxle.

Personally, I could live with those imperfections, but not at 7K. I'd go back to the seller and say you will need to re-evaluate your offer over the weekend and then come back with an offer of say 6K take it or leave it...

I also would look into other 951's. You might find a decently clean example for 8-10K which would need no work and be ready for modifications of your choice.

i don't think you'll find one in pristine condition (seats, dash, working AC) for less than $12k. there's a couple on Autotrader in nice shape, some with mods, for around $13-14k.

the items i showed prices for above were from Automotion, a big Porsche parts/accessories place. you may be able to find that stuff even cheaper with some digging around. the dash is an easy and cheap fix, the seats can be covered until you decide to reskin them or replace them. the carpet would probably be more of a PITA than expensive, but i could be wrong. the big deal would be the clutch (Tom might be able to help you out with that) and the AC. i finally broke down and bought a new climate control head for my 928 ($$$). it it isn't already, you should probably have it converted to R-134a if you get it.

my 928 had a few annoying problems that i dealt with, but nothing affected driveablility.

and don't forget, there is always the Porsche Swap Meet at Hershey! my buddy got new seats and wheels for his '76 911SC Targa there. lots of good stuff there to buy and SEE.

I disagree with your pricing. You can find really nice 951's at $10k.

In fact, here is one:

The other car is in IN. I was under the impression he was flying to get it anyway. There are a few more I have been looking at. One in KY, another in SC. I think a few in NY. Just saying that they can be found at that price in good shape.

I'm looking at another car in IL this weekend and a different one in IN (not yours Tshark) next weekend. Both are in great shape, ~$10k. Yeah, there are a few dash cracks. I have come to the conclusion that the dash is something I am going to have to repair no matter how much I pay for the car. If you couldn't tell, I'm looking at 951's as well.

Shelfy- 951 is a 944 turbo. Just like the latest 911 is a 997, it is the factory designated chassis code.
