Transmission goes rrrRRRrrr- Car doesn't move! Help!

I just picked up a '92 SVX with 102k and a "bad transmission". It makes a scary grinding sound when you put the shifter into any gear, including park or reverse, and the car doesn't move at all. Tranny fluid is up and doesn't smell burnt. I've heard of 4eat transmissions losing certain gears, but never going out entirely. Does anyone have any 'easy fixes' I can try before I do a trans swap with my other '92 (blown head gasket, good trans- go figure!). It looked like the front diff fluid was low- could that be the problem?

The tranny is junk. Usually what happens is you'll lose one gear...then another...then another. Eventually you get to the point where no gears work. This is where you're at. Start swapping.

That sounds like the front diff is blown.

It can't be the front diff, while it does it in P.
You don't say if it happens in N. If it does it in N, then I would go for the front pump. If it doesn't do it in N, then it could well be the output shaft broken, as Paul has said. Can't say I have heard of the shaft braking at that point. They do break the Transfer clutch off the transfer gear though. You could drop the pan, to see what ground up bits are there.

Either way Dave, it does look like a swap is due.

Harvey.

Thanks and sorry...

Thanks everyone for all of the helpful suggestions. Sorry about the duplicate postings- I'm fairly new here and wasn't quite sure where to post my question. I'll know better next time!
