Twin Turbo Legacy nearly ready

My Legacy GT is almost ready for the road.

There was a bad misfire caused by one bad coil. Replaced this with a new one from Subaru UK, and the car is now running OK.

Still has a knock in the engine though. The engineer reckons the ongoing misfire may have caused damage to the piston and/or the liner in that cylinder. It will be OK to drive, but no knowing how long before it worsens. A suck it and see approach needed, so I am putting it on the road this week.

This will allow me to work on the SVX. I will have the black one ready for the UK meet next summer. With a supercharger if at all possible.

The workshop is getting the TT Legacy ready for MoT. New brakes, replacing brake fluid, replacing all engine fluids, anything it needs really. Oh, and I will get new tyres and laser tracking as well.

Let you know what it is like when I get all that done.

Joe

Yep.

But not lately.

He had software problems with fuelling last time we spoke. He was getting a friend to sort that for him.

Will give him a ring now that I am ready for the dirty fingernails bit.

Arh crap. You can't keep that sort of thing a secret. We have ways and means of finding out. We have spies,

Where is James when we need him, checking out an "Automatic turbo" here in Ozz.

Harvey.

P.S. I know he had the brakes done and was talking blowers at your meeting a year or more ago.

Smile Blown up

Hi Harvey

Don't know the current state of play, in fact will ring Graham tonight to see if he has solved the problem.

Software problem is too strong a word.

ECU problem is closer. The MAF sensor was not able to keep up with the airflow, or you could say that the range of signal the MAF could give would not cope with what the blower was delivering.

Not sure what the cure might be. Possibly a different MAF model, or maybe a piggy back ecu or both.

I presume and hope it's sorted by now.

Let you know when the veil of secrecy is lifted.

Not signing this in case Andy has me kneecapped

Drove home the Legacy last night. Drove like a bird, but too early for me to make definitive comment.

Does not seem to me to have as much torque low down the rev range like the SVX, but of course, it's no slouch. Upper range, it would leave the SVX way behind. When the revs hit 4000, the numbers start really piling up on the clock.

It is quiet and has a nice sound. Coarser than the six cylinder, but sporty and rumbly, not blary or sharp like those ricing youngsters.

Regards body control, it is good, very good. The long wheelbase shows over the bumps. However, for ride control, the SVX is a way sweeter package. Thats why I still love it.

Gonna start next week swapping out engines etc.

Joe

Exclamation Snap!, crackle!, pop!

Well, I spoke too soon.

Went yesterday for two tyres, on the way home the engine went.

Don't know what yet, but it sounds like a broken piston to me. Just barely got home.

Will have to organise a new engine from Japan for the thing.

I was a bit crestfallen, but I'm OK now. If it had to break, better now than when I am 150 miles down the country.

On the positive side, when it was going, it went really well. It won't be much of a penance driving it when I get it sorted.

Back to the drawing board. The SVX refurb will have to wait for a month or two.

Joe

Sorry to hear it Joe.

If that's "the luck of the irish" I don't want any of it.

Good luck getting it fixed.

Phil.

Thanks for the sympathy Phil.

You make your own luck sometimes. If I was being properly diligent, I would have paid an expert to vet the car in Japan before purchase.

The company in Japan are very apologetic, and they are supplying me with another engine. Can't ask for fairer than that. They will even buy a running car at auction, take the engine out and send to me to ensure I get a good engine of the correct type.

Let you know how I get on, it will probably take a couple of months.

Joe

Thanks Jay.

It will keep me honest for another few months.

I will still be an everyday SVX driver, as well as being a 2 SVX owner.

Hi Joe

What a roller coaster ride on the Legacy Joe.

Good luck on the repair and the SVX rebuilds. How's Ann holding up with all the car drama?

Cheers,
Todd
