Subaru Flat-12 ....

Does anybody know more about the Formula1 engine that Subaru and (I think) moto-moderni, or something similar, made for the COLONI FC189B car back in the beginning of -90's (or late 80's) ?

Here is a link http://www.drivernetwork.net/1990r/1990france.html

That's news to me... Never knew Subaru made a flat 12 for Formula 1. It'll be interesting to know if it was derived from the EG33!

Good find!

I know it didn't do so well and that the team didn't even use the engine for an entire season. I'm almost certain that it never completed a race distance. If you search Google for 'Coloni Subaru' you can find a few photos.

The engine was branded Subaru, but was really built, as you said, by an Italian manufacturer. It had major oil scavenging problems. The rest of the F1 world abandoned flat engines for a number of reasons.

I think the Coloni team finished the season with DFVs.

Why'd they abandon the falt engine?? I would think that ya'd want a flat engine if you're gonna be pulling crazy high revs.... But what would I know... I'm just a b00b

Flat engines seem nice in theory, which is why Renault used, up until this season, a wide-angle V10 in their car. It seems, at first, like you'd be able to have a much lower CoG. In reality, it's very difficult to mount it low enough to make a difference because you have to fit a proper exhaust under there. Then there's torsional rigidity to think about, because the engine is a stressed member of the chassis.

As for 'crazy high revs,' engines in F1 are still pushing 19k. That's awfully high.

It's not. They aren't even remotely related.

Oh and just a little FYI to everyone... Actually I'll turn it into a trivia question... Here's the question...

Q- What (Piston)internal combustion engine holds the record for the highest RPM's ever attained?? That was the company and what were the revs.?? BONUS... Who was driving the car?

I was actually watching this in Australia when it happened... It was insane!!!

Nice findings, I found a ton of links, but no pic's and very little info besides "did not qualify" and so on.

Yeah, I remember that "low gravity" argument felling apart when they'll have to actually RISE the engine to make room for the exhaust.

and that RPM quiz ....

-Hehe ... that must be my RC car's methanol engine revving out at 47000 RPM's !!

However since I wanted to tell youguys before I left work today I'll goahead and give it away in 5 minutes
