Wink New (old) 92 SVX LSL owner needs help!

159000 hiway miles when purchased from family (original) owner. Preventative maintenance preformed ritualistically every 3,000.00 miles.
Tranny rebuilt @ 92,000, wheel bearings done around the same time. Battery replaced once due to previous owner’s spouse leaving the door ajar!
Has ran beautifully since purchased 01/02/04. (I’m in love!)

I have had a few set backs with her and want to address all to keep her running as smooth as possible)

Remote doesn’t work. Told to take to dealer for reprogramming.
(I have been reading up on this through your site, before I do anything)

Driver side sun visor bulb, not lighting. Is not the bulb, it works in the other side.
These are minor and will deal with when time and weather permit!

MAJOR
(little background)
Got home last night and neighbor said she heard cell phone sound coming from car (don’t have one in car) I walked to car to make sure didn’t leave something on. (Forgetting lights on during day, bad habit, forming…) Didn’t notice anything unusual…
Started car this morning; it started with a little hesitation, (been extremely cold here last couple of weeks or so with snow, freezing rain and mix,) so slight hesitation not uncommon and its lived in the cold elements since purchased in 93.

Went back out to leave about 20 minutes later and noticed 4 of what I call (dummy lights) on which has never happened. They’ve all gone out after starting. Four lights on were, charge indicator, abs, steering, and can’t remember but want to say airbag light on. Light bulb went on in my head and duh, something’s wrong…

Put foot on brake to put in gear and car died.
Wouldn’t restart…only clock and radio came on.
I had a similar episode happen a couple of weeks ago when it wouldn’t start after fueling.
I had security button (on) un-intentionally, I thought no start was due to opening pass door while key in ignition. (Security light on) (Still unsure if this is what caused non –start) it did start without any help within about 5 minutes, made sure I haven’t turned security on at switch. No further problems…. until this morning.

Jumped it twice, 1st time it ran a couple of min and died when given gas….
Second time died within seconds of starting.

Didn’t try her again. I’ve been running through SVX sites I’ve found to see if I can find the answer, before taking to the dealer to be reamed…

With so much electrical, thought I would run it by you experienced owners to see if I could be missing something simple to check
Gut tells me alternator, but concerned it might be fuel related? Haven’t run it below half tank but haven’t treated for fuel line freeze either. It’s never froze and lived in Colorado until recently.

Any input would be sincerely appreciated, no family within 4 states and mechanically willing, but illiterate to certain extent.
Thanks in advance.

Mel,
WELCOME!

Let me see if I can take your questions one by one (kind of )

The remote, probably needs batteries. Don't go buy 8 button batteries. Go to Radio Shack and buy a two pack of GP27A Equivalents. Will cost about three bucks as opposed to 30.

Driver's side visor bulb (if not the bulb) is probably a problem with the wiring being stripped at the "elbow" of the visor. Check it out. Surprisingly, that may also be your OTHER problem. Sounds silly, but the wiring to the sunvisors have given SVX owners FITS for years. Pop the elbow off the driver's side visor and check the wires, they may be shorting.

If not, have your battery tested at Autozone or Advance. If that's not the problem, it's the Alternator. My guess is it's not fuel related. I couldn't start mine on a jump last week. The battery was just too far gone to translate the current. A new battery solved my problem.

Hope this helps, and, don't be a stranger. You're among the upper echelon of TRUE SVX FANATICS!

Also, once you get the batteries changed in your remote, and the system still don't work, just holler. I'll give you the steps to program your system. It ain't hard and not worth paying the dealership (who probably wouldn't know how to do it anyway. )
