I made it home, but I don't know if I ever do that again...!!
The coldest reading on the way home was -43 cels. (-45.4F)
That is refreshingly chilly indeed! The coldest I have ever been to was -30 cels, and that is quite rare back in Kazakhstan. Here, in CA, the coldest that I ever been to was about 0. And I was not driving either. I was on my bike, up on Mt. Hamilton in 2001. Imagin what kind of mileage I get on that machine, lol.

PS. by the way why didn't anyone told me about my spelling? I wrote "randown" instead of “rundown”, embarrassing to read my own writing.

What? Please explain what you mean by this. Is the dense, cold air offering so much more resistance that cars actually require more power to move at a given speed? Is that what you're implying? >>

<<I think mark10t mean that when the cold makes the grease and oil in the motor and transmission line very thick and almost solid (it feels so anyway ) the power to overcome theese factors increases and cosumes fuel....right mark10t ?>>

Yup. Everything gets real stiff at these temp's. I woke up to a reading of -32.4 deg. F this AM- and that's not windchill!!

I remember a cold spell like this back in the early '70's and when I pushed the clutch in on my '71 Capri 2000, it stayed on the floor for a while! You didn't really have to use the brakes, you just stopped pushing on the gas pedal and the car would come to a stop on it's own.

BBBBRRRRRRRR!!!!

(It's warmed all the way up to -20 deg. F!!)

I drive in any weather...on the -15 degree trip, it cost me like 7 MPG and my ashtray when I put it out the side of the car to tap it slightly to clean it out, and the whole thing shattered. Now I need another

Syn gear box fluid or AFT is the way to go with really cold temperatures. Old gear box oil will actually have a higher viscosity then when it was new. The older it gets, the thicker it gets.

I just find it EXTREMELY hard to swallow that the EG33 (which inherently runs a bit rich) with a mpg sucking AWD system AND automatic transmission with over 3000lbs of car can EVER reach above 27mpg. I don't buy it. Say what you will, but I'll believe it when I see it.

And Chicane, what could I do besides look at the "meter" on the gas pump and rely on that?

This morning I started at 08:00 heading south on the E4, 400 km and 4 hours later I'm at my work, filling the tank with 33.5L of fuel.
The average speed seems to be 100km/h...agree ?

And when using a common used formula 400/33.5 I get the result of 11,940298507462686567164179104478 and that is how many "km" I got on every "L" of fuel.

If you wish, you can convert it to "mpg".

First hand. My engine runs great, and so does my transmission. I've NEVER gotten above 25mpg... even ON long extended road trips with the SVX humming along at 80mph the entire time.

OK Rob, so your SVX doesn't get the same mileage others have. Why is that so hard to believe? Inherent mechanical differences, driving style differences, recent tune-up (O2 sensors, plugs, air filter, oil change), major mechanical work (new cat cons).

Nick (Mr Pockets) has reported better than 30mpg from his SVX. I have no reason to doubt the veracity of his claim.

My SVX gets EXACTLY the mileage that SUBARU ADVERTISED. Around 17ish in town, and 25ish on the highway. IF the SVX was capable of even 27mpg, I'm POSITIVE subaru would have advertised it as 27mpg on the highway. It makes NO sense for them to advertise subpar mileage when their car is capable of more.

When SVXs were NEW, subaru claimed 25mpg on hte highway. When they were NEW. New everything. I've gotten 24.5mpg before. My claims make sense. 30mpg makes absolutely no sense.

I do. It's a fairly heavy car, with an engine that runs rich, with a slushbox, AND its AWD. I don't care if the Pope declares his SVX gets 30mpg, I won't believe it until I see it. The drivetrain and weight of the car are against this claim, as are subaru's original specs.
