What are "Uni-directional" wheels?"

I suspect all have seen many SVXs and photos of SVXs that have the "uni-directional" OEM wheels mounted on the wrong side of the car. What damage or problems will occur from this incorrect installation? Is it incorrect?

If there are no negative consequences from mounting the wheels "backwards," why are they designated "uni-directional?"

NOTE: I'm asking only about the OEM WHEELS NOT TIRES!

Thanks in advance,

greg

Greg-

I suspect the answers here will be similar to the answers to this question when you asked it on the other forum.

Re: What are "Uni-directional" wheels?"

I suspect you're correct. I was hoping to get an answer to the (new) question of "If no negative consequences.....Why are they called uni-directional?"

I'm the stubbornly curious type.....

And, oh, btw, I just bought an SVX with the wheels mounted backwards.

You will hear some say that they " scoop air in to cool the brakes" but this is a myth. It is only for cosmetic purposes.

Harvey.

Re: What are "Uni-directional" wheels?"

they are teardrop shaped to allow water when in the rain, to basically splash out the wheel.
take out a center cap, spray some wd-40 in there when the wheel is a little dirty, throw back on the center cap, and go drive around, out on the highway for a little while.
You will see the spray out pattern after you have parked the car. it follows the curve on the teardrop like a T
It also helps slush in the winter get thrown out the same way, helping the wheel keep balanced.
If you have ever driven a car with snow stuck in the wheel, it will vibrate your steering cause they are out of balance with the weight of the snow.
The engineers designed this wheel to prevent that. Pretty Smart, that is why it is SVX, Subaru vehicle ten
way ahead of its time. This is a superiorly over designed wheel, not just for cosmetics, but a real purpose, especially in snow/slush/rain
