Re: any one know about the 2.2l subaru engine

Arrr double post. Bad juju.

I don't know if it'll work...The engine was changed slightly from 96 to 97, and one of the changes was to the valvetrain. If he has two heads you might be able to put both on and make a hybrid engine.

Re: any one know about the 2.2l subaru engine

Pretty sure that's the 2.5l, the 2.2l was used on the first gen legacys.

Re: any one know about the 2.2l subaru engine

Although the 96 and 97 are both 2.2L SOHC with single port exhaust, the 96 is a non-interference engine, and the 97 is an interference engine, so I think they must have changed head designs, and probably piston designs. I'll check some part numbers for you if I can.

Re: any one know about the 2.2l subaru engine

So I checked on 96 2.2L vs 97 2.2L out of Impreza Outbacks, which should be the same engine that they put in the Legacies those years, and the part numbers for the heads for those two years are different. I am not sure what the differences are, but they are not the same heads.

Nah, the 2.2 showed up in some form all the way until 1999. However, the ones made for MY97 and later have redesigned piston crowns which means that they are now interference engines. Also, mid 1996 or so, EJ22's started having solid lifters, not HLA's like the previous EJ22 and EG33.

Re: any one know about the 2.2l subaru engine

The earlier style 2.2 heads look ENTIRELY different than the later 2.2 heads, so if the other head "Looks" like his original head, I say it'll work fine.

Based on his previous posts, I doubt that's a possibility.

97 is interference... I am guessing broken timing belt.

The big difference is in the exhaust ports. dual or single port. Either will work but make sure you have the right set of head pipes. I personally would use the cams and lifters out of the original engine just for safe measure

Re: any one know about the 2.2l subaru engine

The stage 2 EJ22 looks just like a single cam EJ25, and is an interference motor. I am not sure when it started appearing, I think it was late production 97, since my friend has a 97 OBS that has the "old style" EJ22 in it. If both engines look identical, then yes it will swap. The newer style heads should, in theory, be interchangeable, but I do not know for sure since I've never had the two apart side-by-side to compare.
