tranny question!....

hey guys... i'm finally getting worried enough 'bout my transmission to post a question... i searched the forum and didnt see anything directly relating... so..

when my wheels are spinning on snow or ice... sometimes i get a whiney noise for just a second...
-at first i figured i just melted my way down to pavement and chirped my tires... (getting out of a plowed in parking spot) but could it really be that simple??
-i can only think of it coming from more of the passenger side... (help narrow it down at all?)
-it DOES seem more common when one side(drivers side)of my car is on dry pavement and the other is on a slippery surface.. (tire chirping? or car
crying??)
-i want to change any and all fluids... diff fluid was tan and smelt bad.. tranny fluid red...ish.....

i think thats all i got... any expertise is awesome as always... thanks!
-drew

You said "wheels", plural. Is this correct? This determines weather the AWD is working correctly. If only the front spin and then the whining happens and the front wheels stops spinning because the back wheels engauge the C solenoid might be going bad.

If front and back wheels spin and there is a whining noise then that is above me. Harvey help.

How old is the tranny fluid?

Front diff does smell bad. If I remenber right it takes GL-5 80wt, front, GL-5LS, rear, thick and stinky.

You need to know which wheels are spinning when it makes that noise. The sound could be the AWD clutch trying to catch the rear wheels up to the front.

could also be that you are only spinning one front wheel. This will cause the open differential to whine as you are rubbing metal to metal of the spyder gears in the carrier

SHouldn't need to replace anything, try to avoid doing it though or else your differential will probobly puke out

Tom
As Tom says, it seems like one front wheel is spinning. The noise is the differential gears working. These gears are spur gears that are not very quite. That in itself is not a problem, but the fact that the front is spinning. is a worry. It would appear that the AWD is not engaging, or not engaging fast enough to prevent the front from spinning.

You say that the 'shop' confirmed that the AWD was working. Did they just put it on a lift, and see the rear wheels turn, or did they do the test under wheel spin load? I would think that the AWD is not working properly, and the front diff is at risk.

Harvey.
