Your Thoughts (Engine)
My SVX currently has 232k on the engine, and it is leaking oil and making a god-awful squeaking noise when I hit the throttle. I was thinking about doing a total vacuum hose replacement and changing a bunch of gaskets (intake, throttle, value covers, oil pan, maybe head too), but it seems like a lot of work. I thinking of leaning towards a total engine replacement instead.
I got a quote from a local tune shop in Denver, and they want $1,600 just for labor on the swap. Sounds like a rip-off to me. Is it worth rebuilding the engine instead of getting rid of it?

Talk to Tom (TomsSVX), buy him an airplane ticket, give him a couple of hundred bucks and tell him how beautiful Colorado is this time of year. You'll get a much better job done and save a lot of money!

madj80, $1600 for labor?!?! If they take their time and spend all day changing the engine out for a nice 100,000 mile one, they SHOULD charge about eight hours labor. You should be able to buy a used engine from a junkyard for maybe, $500? You could save some money by replacing your own sparkplugs and some hoses when your replacement motor is sitting on the ground. When it is out of the car it's actually easy.
