Is $2600 the drive out price? Installed and everything? Did it include a warranty? What is the difference between rebuilt and remanufactured? I am getting an education that I never sought.

Generally, when we refer to a "rebuild" it is by someone other than Subaru. If we call it a "reman" or, "remanufactured" we're normally refering to an "Official Subaru Remanufactured" transmission.

Another question or two. What kind of a warranty does the remanufacture come with? And can you give me the name and phone number of where you got the work done? Maybe I can use that info to get reasonable treatment here in the Atlanta area.

Thanks, I am sure that I will have more questions. "The man who knows nothing will ask many questions."

Greg, a Suby Reman comes with a 2 year 24K warranty. With an independent rebuild, you'd be lucky to get a year. As for the info on the installer, Leo will have to give you that.

Beav did make a good point, though. That price was for an FWD transmission. Your AWD will be a little more, but, certainly not 2,000.00 more.

Dealer Prices

As most of you know, the Dealer can charge pretty much what they want, so many many dealers of all kinds mark up list prices by 10%, 20%, 30% and sometimes more ! VW dealers in my area are known to buy parts from the same distributors that we use and sell them at VW list plus. I really don't think it's right when they buy say, a wheel bearing that lists for $90 for $18 and sell it for $98 even if it's made by an original equipment manufacturer like FAG. Getting back to Subaru, I was disappointed and a little upset to find that Tacoma Nissan-Subaru, Subaruparts.com, if you walk into their store, charges Subaru list plus. We therefore don't buy from them but buy from Carter in Seattle who sells for Subaru list and gives us a usual 20% discount as a business. I guess this "What the market will bear" pricing doesn't really sit right with me because most customers just walk into their local dealer and pay them whatever they want, not realizing they're getting screwed. Moral: Shop around and tell your friends.

5-speed replacement

Brian,

I saw on the small car site connected to the 5-speed for sale on e-bay that a 5-speed replacement is about $4000. I would be interested but Tacoma is a long way from Atlanta (like Mars). How much/far can I drive my svx with 1st gear gone? I have it in manual now (skipping 1st, I've been told) with little acceleration from a stop but when it gets going it's OK. When I put it in 1st using the gear shift, it will not move at all. This transmission thing is driving me nuts.

Thanks,

Greg

Any place on this side of the world that can do the 5-speed replacement?
