You are absolutely right. Apart from it's self-destructive tendancies, the SVX auto is perfect for the car (although I'm referring to the non-US version ).
IMHO, the 5 speed crowd don't really understand what the SVX is all about: Smooth & Effortless performance. Phil. |

Love the slingshot effect too! However, in my SVT Lightning it felt more like a catapult from hell!

Don One {Quixote}
For those who like a more aggressive first gear.......
The TCU is programmed to shift rapidly up from first, because the large amounts of torque available are hard on driveline components, and to avoid wheelspin on gravel etc. Mostly to avoid damage, however. If you want full revs launching, then select the 1 range, and floor the throttle. It will wind right up to the rev limiter, about 6750 on mine, at which point it will automatically shift up to 2 range itself to avoid over-revving damage. [Your selector lever will still be in 1 position though] At which point also you will be fairly blasting for the horizon. As long as your over-revving limiter switch continues to work, you will not blow up the engine. Would not be doing it every day though, but worth doing at least once just to experience that angry snarl from the engine. Joe

Re: Don One {Quixote}
That's kinda scary... I'm not sure I want to try that with my 4EAT!

Be Brave!
Well, you ought to do it at least once just to make sure that the over-revving circuit is there and is working!
And, for the fun of it..... Joe

Disclaimer..
OH...
If your revs go over 7000 in 1, change manually before you do harm. Anybody blows up their EG33 doing this, you are on your own. Safety systems do not always work, and rev countrers are there to be watched. Joe

This is the way I autocross - put it in 1st and leave it. If the straights are so long as the speed is such that the rev-limiter tells the tranny to shift, it happens. When revs get low enough, the tranny will downshift back to 1st (sometimes I do have to "play with the throttle" to get it to downshift in a timely manner). Hard on the trans? Yep, no doubt. But it works just fine. If you are interested, I will send you a videopretty large file - I have it in my locker, but can't bring it up for some reason) of me running (two runs from different angles) autocross in May that RUFUS took (great job videoing too!). In one run you can very clearly hear the upshift and downshift - and yes, that engine is humm'ing! This was a fast course (meaning somewhat long straights). With most autocross courses the car never gets out of 1st gear. Harry

Re: Re: Re: Don One {Quixote}
Harry,
Next time I'm up in your neck of the woods, I'll have to watch that video. I'm not sure if my e-mail will accept large files so unless you can get the one in your locker to work, I'll have to watch it at your place... -Chike P.S. I checked and my over-revving switch does work. Hope it doesn't ruin the tranny. Quote:

Not quite, but it's pretty cool to feel your car shift at 6750rpms instead of the lousy 6250 the TCU normally shifts at...
