The best I can find is a Honda F1 engine at 19,100
A BMW F1 engine was rumoured to get 19,130 but unproven. I am sure experimental engines have exceeded this by a long way.

Andy.... You were the closest one yet... Mind you this engine that achieved this Amazing number DIDN'T stay together very long
The Engine was the Turbo V8 Honda engine from Alex Zinardi's Target-Chip Ganassie (sp?) CART car... The year was 1998... It was the Sydney GP (Think that's what it was)... I was watching Alex coming outta the pits.... Accelerating 1st gear...., 2nd gear..., 3rd gear.... then all the sudden WWwwwwwwwweiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiieeieieieiiii.......... ..........BAAAAaaaaaammmmmmm!!!!!!!!!...... The engine bay exploded and car peices flew EVERYWHERE!!! Noone was really sure what happened. Then after the race the team anounced that after analizing the ECU from the engine Honda (and thier team) were the new world record holders for rpm's attained by a mulit-cylinder piston engine... Turns out what happened was instead of shifting to 4th he downshifted to 2nd while red-lineing(17,000rpm I believe is the redline) in 3rd... This down shift sent the engine to 21,300 rpm's (ish)!!!!! It held together for just under 2 seconds then exploded like a grenade was placed back there... I actually saw this on TV when it happened and let me just say that I didn't think that a piston engine could make such a sound But it really was cool to beable to see something like that LIVE right when it happened ...

With race revs of over 19k, I am sure that F1 development engines are run at well over 21k regularly, but they wouldn't make that public. Honda have a road bike engine which red-lines at 19k but is limited at 21k

Yea, F1 engines do tach higher than any other racing engine... The BMW F1 engine redlines at 19,100rpm... That's really really high... But still 21k rpm is insane!!! From an engine that was only meant to go to 17k...
I know the bike that you are talking about... It's the Honda CBR250RR... It is available in Australia too... Last I checked though it had a redline of 18,000rpm... Either way that is really high too...

Over-revving that engine to that extent isn,t a good idea. A comparison would be to take an EG33 to 8000rpm!
The UK spec on the CBR250RR is 19k (Spinal Tap figures) but a limiter at 21K is loony

Speaking of the EG33, the Road and Track Guide to the SVX and other sources mention 7000 Rev limits.
Was the power peak reduced to 5400 sometime in development, and therefore the shift point to 6200 to 6400 RPM? My '92 shifts around 6250 on the tach, well past its power point. Does anyone know about the 7000 RPM claims for the EG33 in early magazine articles? |

...and the mystery tightens...
....the early SVX +30HP claims .... .... topspeed: 155mph (-92).... ....at 7000rpm's the 4EAT forceshifted.... ....claims over 260km/h on his -92.... ....The new SVX coupé with 250HP... -Is there something we can learn from here? ...-Go figure /Sonny

In the laste -80's, I was dreaming about this engine to! Did you know that they actually put that engine in a streetcar called "Subaru casupita" ? Look here http://www.subaru-svx.net/forum/show...threadid=18594 ..now THAT would have been a GREAT car to have /Sonny
