Starter issues
The starter went out on my svx and i put a new one in. Well i probably started it up about 20 times and it was doing the same things (making a clicking noise) went to autozone where i bought it and it tested bad. It wasnt spinning. (duralast starter) i got a new one and this one was made the U.S *thank god* i put it in and it started right up. Well i drove it until it was hot. I left it sit in the garage for about an hour and it did the same thing. just clicked. I noticed i didnt have my foot on the brake. I put my foot on the brake messed with the gears and then it started. What could this be? I cant have another starter go bad there not going to cover it.

Re: Starter issues
Sounds like the neutral safety switch on the AT. If it starts after messing with the lever, thats the problem. Its the switch that locks out the starter if the AT is in any drive gear, it sticks sometimes or goes bad. Try starting in "N" or tap the lever upwards a few times if in "P".
The other possibilities could be bad connection at starter or battery, or the relay (search Bosch relay mod). |

Re: Starter issues
How hard is that to replace (neutral safety switch) and the wiring to the starter too. cause i think its the wiring.

Re: Starter issues
Can't sound like the switch. Could be the switch, but that particular switch going out is practially nil... however if Jesus delays his coming back to earth long enough, every SVX in America will have the Bosch relay starter mod!!!
And so will Trevor! Keith If you really want to know what the problem is, test the circuit. Last edited by kwren; 09-14-2009 at 05:47 PM. Reason: forgoto include my friend Trevor |

Re: Starter issues
why is it you guys insist on bosch ,subaru makes a great starter relay
ive never replaced one i a car ,they started with 5sp legacy ,it works great to remove voltage drop problems with all auto subarus allso auto zone is the very last place i shop ,there stuff is crap ,just like bosch , very little goes in to any thing i own other than OEM nobdy knows them like the people who built it |

Re: Starter issues
some SVXs came from the factory with Bosch relays on them. not the mod, they are used in different places.

Re: Starter issues
If you've done the Bosch relay mod to help your starter along, when cruise control is on (albeit not active)and the automatic is in park or neutral or the clutch is depressed, it's entirely possible that you'll get a CEL. I get them regularly from this.

With the relay in series with this wire, If the relay has a winding resistance more that 100 ohms it will trigger, to turn on the starter, when you shift into P or N with the CC on. Harvey.

Re: Starter issues
Have you ever checked the resulting code? It could be interesting to trace the circuitry for the exact reason.

Re: Starter issues
my 92 was doing the EXACT same thing, but very infrequent.
Turned out to be a issue with the security system and there is a "fix" posted somewhere on here to install a relay and harness on the starter. All I know is since my son did that I've had NO issues the past couple of years starting the car. |
