Cold Weather Start
Anyone have any tips on preventing stalling when starting up a car that's sat in the freezing cold for several hours, aside from keep it in the garage where it's warm?
I was up near Calgary, where it was a lot colder than I had anticipated! The car started up real hard, sometimes stalling out right away, unless I gave it some gas, then i was good in park. But if I attempted to put it in gear, it stalled out. I had one hell of a hard time starting it back up. I had to give it lots of gas as I turned that key. I thought I was in big trouble! So I got it started a final time and let it sit in park, warming up for about 10 minutes. With fear and anticipation building, I quickly pressed the break and threw the car into reverse, like pulling off a bandaid! To my relief, she went right into gear, no stalling! This happen to anyone else? She's usually in the nice somewhat warm garage at nights. I'm just afraid that this will be a common occurence if she has to sit in a parking lot for a while when it's cold out, and so I'm looking for a way to help prevent this from happening. When it's around freezing out, she'll stall out on the startup nearly, and then stall out if she's put into gear without giving her time to warm up. Sound familiar anyone? |

No replies, eh?? That's ok. I'm hoping it was just bad gas.

high idle
What RPM does the car idle at when it is really cold? I didn't look, but what year is the car also? What was the temperature outside?
Just a few questions that might help the diagnosis. |

Cold start valve
The XT's had a "cold start valve" (equivalent to a choke) that automatically adjusted the fuel mixture to compensate for cold start-up. I'm sure the SVX has something akin to this, and that yours is not functioning (probably not at all). Mine starts and immediately idles at 1,500 to 1,700, then gradually lowers. I'm sure someone else on this board can figure your trouble out a lot more precisely...

How about trying the Engine Temp Sensor? I had this problem last year when the temperatures started reaching freezing. I think I was the only one with that problem then. Now it seems everyone is having that problem.
