can overfilling tranny cause problems?

hi quick question. pls reply if u know the answer otherwise dont

if i have overfilled tranny can it cause any harm? and why or why not

as i think my tranny was overfilled for more then a year (when tranny was repaired)... still goes but weird things happen.
