steering = none

My steering suddenly went out on the hwy. Now my steering wheel can freely spin while having zero effect on the car. Obviously this wasnt a good thing: Smashed up the car.

Was on the way to the 25th Anniversary meet.

I sure do hope the car is savable. There's a shredded tire and scrapes along the side (I hit the center divider at an angle at about 50 mph, the hwy curved and I did not). Not sure what else is damaged, aside from steering prob of course.

Recently had in shop, got belt tightened b/c steering would make unhappy noise when first used after turning car on.

My poor car

Re: steering = none

That is terrible. Is the belt still on there? Replacing the O Ring may have taken care of the squealing, but that is a moot point. Glad you are safe.

Re: steering = none

For there to be a total failure as described I would suspect a U-joint on the steering shaft between the steering wheel and the steering box. It could be one of the other connecting components also. It's not likely the pump or rack. That would just make the steering very stiff.

Re: steering = none

That's got to be a frightening experience...

A total loss of steering connection has to be a mechanical failure at one of the connections.

-Steering wheel to steering column
-Steering column tilt/slide mechanism
-One of the u-joint couplers in the engine bay
-Stripped pinion/rack gear inside the steering rack itself

Any failure of the hydraulic system (belt, pump, lines, fluid loss/leaks/air bubbles) would ony cause a difference in the steering feel (stiffness, jumpy steering, etc) but not a loss of connection to the front wheels. The only thing that can cause that is metal breaking or the u-joints sliding off their shafts.

Alycone
How did you make out after the 25th meet?
Did you get the strut and the steering fixed?

Re: steering = none

Sue's still in surgery with struts and alignment, I have to pick out new tires tomorrow. I'm relieved to be home with her and have her be fixable. I really thought I was going to total her when I crashed, but turns out Subarus are quite durable.

I think my car has 9 lives.

So what was the cause of the steering failure?
