I was one away from dirt with a score of 16 correct. <whew! dodged the dirt bullet there!> I still own my steel wheeled Chicago skates with leather straps and fondly recall the smell of the mimeo fluid from the tests we had in school...long, full drags until your chest would nearly burst...ahhh...kids these days don't know what they are missing! LOL

Question

One American car didn't have a dimmer switch. (OK - maybe as a back-up). Name the car & the first year "auto-dim" was offered.

Bonus question from Ron.

I'm gonna be wrong on this for the first to do it, but I had an Uncle who drove a big Buick convertible (1959) that had an on-dash "electric eye" that auto-dimmed the lights. I remember him cussing it when driving down a lonely road and lights from a streetlamp or porch light would dim his high beams.

I had a 65 Buick Riveria that had an adjustable needle in the speedo - you set it at your cruising comfort level, and a buzzer would go off if your highway mph crept up to high - was cruise control available to any cars in those days (I don't remember any)?

My '69 Olds Cutlas had one of those speedos. Damned pathetic and annoying buzzer in it but it made it's point well enough. Was an intersting gizmo for it's time, I suppose but they must have invented cruise control somewhere around that time, no?

Looks like a trip through is called for...

And the answer is...

In 1945, Ralph Teetor received his first patent on a speed cruise control device. Early names for his invention included “Controlmatic”, "Touchomatic”, “Pressomatic” and “Speedostat” and finally the familiar name of “Cruise Control”. Teetor thought of inventing cruise control after a jerky car ride. He was being driven by his lawyer, an avid talker, who would slow down and speed up while conversing. Cruise control was first offered in the 1958 Chrysler Imperial, New Yorker and Windsor car models. By 1960, cruise control was offered on all Cadillacs.

Interesting (and thanks). Since my Riveria was the Gran Sport model (high end - if my memory hasn't totally faded) I wonder why it didn't have cruise by 65 if Caddy had it in 60? My only guess would be it was a mega-buck option then.

For those interested, I found a link that describes the new "active" cruise control system. Pretty interesting.

I have a video on my computer of the Active Cruise control on a Mercedes S class. It was taken from the Top Gear tv show in Europe.

Unhappy

19 of 20....I can't believe I missed the car question! I used to stand in the back seat and tell Dad every car that passed in the early 50's. I was just lucky and guessed the one about memo paper.....I guess I missed out on some highs back then.
Maybe I was too busy washing the ink of those purple passion sheets off in the restroom. They were still in use when I first started teaching (replaced by the photocopier) but I think it was the duplicating fluid and not the ink that provided the odor. Those fluid bottles had skulls and crossbones all over them....one drink and you would go blind.

I sure remember those floor buttons for the headlights, but Dad's 55 Caddy had a "Magic Eye" that automatically dimmed for oncoming traffic too. The radio had a chrome bar over the dial that when pressed, made the dial pointer cruise up and down the dial for the next station. It had aircraft-style air conditioning vents in the headliner. What a car...

OK, you've squirmed long enough. "I believe" the first auto-dimmer offered on a production car was on the '54 Caddy, but I may be off by a year either way.

Another - The '57 Mercury Turnpike Cruiser offered a unique, for its time, answer to the seat adjustment problem for multiple drivers.
Anyone?

Ron (....and you thought '60s Detroit only gave us opera windows).
