Hub-centric rings on Enkei Shoguns and tire size

Does anyone know if you need hub-centric rings for a set of Enkei shoguns? I found another post that said the SVX's hub was 57.1mm, but I cannot find anywhere online that tells the size of the wheel bore on the Shoguns. Does anyone know?

Also, I have noticed that my speedometer is off by about 5mph. I'm sure this is normal to some degree but i don't like it. If I got slightly larger tires on the shoguns, would that help offset it?

For instance, if instead of getting 225/45/R17's if I got 225/50/R17's would that be enough to offset the difference on the speedometer?

Re: Hub-centric rings on Enkei Shoguns and tire size

My guess for the Enkei's would be 71mm but a Google Search would confirm. I have had 225/50-17's with a 48mm offset and they occasionally touch the outer rear fenderwheel at the top portion..big bumps, tight fast curves. No problem with the fronts.

Off 5mph which way? Slow or fast?

Here are the 2 tires you listed, compared to the OEM size.

Hereis the comparison for the 235/45-17 to stock.

You might PM Mike Davis (Green1995SVX). He had shoguns on his 1994 emerald. He could tell uou if he used hubcentric rings. I would recommend that you do.

Re: Hub-centric rings on Enkei Shoguns and tire size

Oh yeah, sorry, I should have mentioned that. Its running about 5mph too slow.

For instance, the speedo says 75mph, but the GPS (garmin, phone and built in navi stereo) all show that i'm going 70.

It's funny that you mentions Green1995SVX. I saw another post in my search where you posted pics of his shoguns so I did PM him. However, I saw that he hadn't logged on in few weeks so I wasn't sure when he would again and thought I'd put a post up to see if anyone else knew.

I loved the look of those wheels on his car though. i can't wait to get them on my SVX

Re: Hub-centric rings on Enkei Shoguns and tire size

That calculator is really helpful. It does look like if i got them in 225/50/R17, that it would help shave off a little bit of the inaccuracy. If I got them in 225/50/R18's, then it might even be right on the money with the speedo, but I don't want to take a chance with rubbing the sidewalls too much so I'll stick with the 17s i think. Thanks!

Re: Hub-centric rings on Enkei Shoguns and tire size

Definitely post up here if you get hubcentric rings sorted - I also have a set of shoguns waiting to go on.

I would also double check thread engagement on your lug nuts - at least on mine, it seems like I'm going to need either extended lugs or extended-thread nuts as there isn't much engagement at all.

Re: Hub-centric rings on Enkei Shoguns and tire size

Minimum thread engagement should be equal or greater than the diameter of the wheel stud.

In our case 12.5mm or 0.5"of thread engagement.
On a closed-end nut, 1 1/2 times is better, or .75".

On a regular open-end nut, filling the entire threaded hole is optimal.

Extended (longer) studs shouldn't be necessary unless you are using thick wheel spacers.

What you may need is E.T. (Extended thread) lug nuts

Re: Hub-centric rings on Enkei Shoguns and tire size

Someone mentioned on the facebook site that the offset should be inside the rim and it does have what I think what might be the offset. It says ET38 next to the 17x7 so I assume that would be a 38mm offset.

When I find out what rings I need, i'll post that too.

SVX hub bore is 56.1. I got 57.1 hub rings and they were slightly too big. 56.1 fit perfectly.

Yeah, I'm planning on going with extended lug nuts. No spacers here. With the rim sitting on the hub, I only get about 2 turns of engagement on a 'standard' lug, which translates to only about 3mm. Extended nuts should take care of that.

Thumbs up Re: Hub-centric rings on Enkei Shoguns and tire size

What is the actual thickness of the wheel itself where the lug nuts are?

I like to see 6-8 turns to fully torqued for safety.

Re: Hub-centric rings on Enkei Shoguns and tire size

I went ahead and ordered some of the extended length lugnuts. Thanks for telling me about those, i didn't even know they existed.

I still haven't gotten the hub centric rings though, but discount tire says they have them in stock for about $5 for a set so i'll just let them figure out which ones i need.

As for the size, is anyone here running 225/50/R17's (or anything with a 50/R17 rating). Is there any problem running that size? I don't think they'd rub as there seems to be plenty of room in the wheel well.

With the 225/50/R16s it seems my speedometer is off by about 2.5mph. It seems to be faster than my actual speed. The GPS says i'm going 70, the speedometer says i'm going 72-73mph. So i thought getting slightly bigger wheels might offset this a little.

Re: Hub-centric rings on Enkei Shoguns and tire size

I run 225/50-17 Cooper Zeon's on a 17 x 8 rim, 48mm offset. The fronts have never had a clearance problem. The rears have extremely rarely contacted the fender liner and only with a full load in the back seat, maybe a couple of times in 8 months, and have only left a minor scuff mark on the tire.

Re: Hub-centric rings on Enkei Shoguns and tire size

Thanks, i'm glad to hear that. I think the shoguns have a 38mm offset, you don't think that'd be a problem, do you?

I might go ahead and give it a try. I called Discount tire and talked to a guy there that said they could try them and see if they fit and if not I could go to some 215/45/R17's instead.

When I get a chance to get them I'll let you all know, and post pics
