Re: How long has your transmission lasted?
Sounds like you've got it right. What were the symptoms of a failed front differential? What's your secret for maintaining a 200K+ transmission?

When the diff went it made a loud clunking noise which increased with the speed of the car. Pulled over right away and had it towed home. I was hoping it was a bad axle. When I put it on the lift with it in park I spun one front wheel which would normally cause the opposite wheel to spin backwards, which it didn't do so I knew something in the diff was gone. Never took it apart but I am pretty sure it sheared off some of the gears. My AWD didn't work before that so I just changed out the entire transmission. |

Re: How long has your transmission lasted?
I don't think it had anything to do with it. Not really sure how long I was without AWD. I was told by the person I bought it off of that it worked, but not really sure if it did. It had 160000 miles on it when I bought it in Sep07. I changed the transmission fluid about 5000 miles after I got it and found large pieces of metal stuck to the magnet, but my transmission shifted fine. Took it all out and changed both the internal and external filter and made sure I had enough money in my bank account for another trans because I was unsure where the metal came from and how long the trans would last. I found out the AWD didn't work during the first snow we had about 4 months later. Transmission lasted until July08 when I was at a light making a right turn. Applied more throttle than necessary when pulling out and hit a pothole midturn and it started clunking immediately; that is why I thought it was a bad axle. So it was driven at least 10000 miles without AWD.

Re: How long has your transmission lasted?
When the AWD is not working the front diff have more work than normal, the rear diff is always "pushing" the car, so it releases some of the stress from the front end... think about it.

Re: How long has your transmission lasted?
Yeah, but the normal distribution is 90% FWD and 10% RWD. I wouldn't expect that extra 10% to be that significant, especially when I'm not using that much power regularly (I'm at 6800' elevation where the engine might make 180hp tops and I don't accelerate hard that often anyway...).

Re: How long has your transmission lasted?
I don't fill it at all... the dealers do. I also have a transmission cooler installed and the subaru external filter kit
