Rear Grinding Noise on Takeoff
It seems after I start the car and accelerate there is this click/grinding sound coming from the rear lower end, almost sounding like the exhaust is making the noise. I let the car warm up for roughly a minute and I still get this abbreviated sound coming from the back of the car for the first quarter mile of the ride whenever I move from a stop. Any ideas what this could be? It's nothing major and it only happens it seems before the car has warmed up. I was just wondering if any of you had experienced anything similar in your svx!

Could be the differential.

Are you sure it's not the exhaust?

Like a dummy I revved it in park like 5 seconds after starting it up before it had the chance to heat up and it started smoking out of the exhaust, not doing that again.

If you drive when it's cold like that it does the same thing... Did you listen for the noise?

Another way to test is to load up the drivetrain. Hold the brake, put it in D and bring the RPM up to 2k temporarily and listen for the noise. Don't hold it there for long as that creates tremendous heat in the tranny.

If it is only on acceleration,
I would put my money on a U-joint some where in the prop shaft (driveshaft) I just replaced mine. There is a big heat shield covering the front two joints, so you may not be able to see it. You can sort of check it by putting the 10amp fuse in (under the hood center, driver side) in the 2wd spot. This will disengage the rear wheel drive. http://www.subaruparts.com/diag/?mod...category=199-1
