the newest thing NOT HID / but LED

Ive had HIDs like most of us in my car now for about 10 yrs
Recently while at SEMA I came across a company who is making
LED replacement bulbs.
I was a bit skeptical as always, so I bought a set for my
Isuzu Vehicross (H4 non projector headlight) and a set of
9006 for my SVX in 5k kelvin rating.

I installed 1 on the right side of my svx and compared it to
the 6K HID that was in the left side of my SVX..
I have to admit, think Im leaving them in !!!
The light output whiter (due to the 5k compared to 6k of course)
but the pattern lites up much better in the first 20 30 ft in front of
the car.
For long distance, I still have 5k HIDs for waaayyyy down the road stuff
but think Im going to stick with the LEDs in my lows for now.

I havent put the H4 set in my Vehicross yet to see how they react
to non projector headlights, but thats next.
These dont use ballast of either and are not as easily breakable like std
halogen or HID bulbs, kind of a plus.

We are going to sell these kits prob for about $150 set.
Ill post some pics.

Re: the newest thing NOT HID / but LED

When I got my car painted the owner of the shop told me that HIDs were really bad for turning the plastic headlights yellow. If that's true these LEDs are a great option.

Re: the newest thing NOT HID / but LED

I think the suns uv rays are more the cause for the plastic
yellowing and the fact that most of the plastics we use now
are recycled isnt helping to be honest... but the internal heat
may not be helping either.
I say this because Ive seen plastic on svx headlights (and other
cars) turn yellow that havnet been driven for a yr but still
sitting in direct sunlite all day.

Not sure the longevity of these yet, but in theory LEDs are suppose to
last longer., time willl tell.
Drove around last nite with mine in on some dark roads, they worked
well. Didnt look as cool as my 6k bulbs, but I can live with that seeing
as they didnt look like yellow-ish halogens either.

Next is to put the H4s in my Vehicross non projectors to see how they
perform.
They are coming out with more bulb applications soon too.

I think the yellowing hazing of the headlights are due to environmental conditions, UV, ozone, etc. I have seen too many cars with this condition that have never used anything but halogens.

That being said, I am convinced that my 35W 5000 HIDS, in both my low beams and fog lights, put out less heat than my OEM halogens.

svxfiles installed the HIDs in my car 5 years ago. While at his house overnight during the winter, the headlights had a thin coating of ice on them in the morning.

Started the car up, turned on the lights and 10 minutes later, the ice had not even begun to melt. Turned on my halogen high beams and the ice melted in less than a minute (but only in the area in front of the high beams).

I have turned the headlights on, without starting the car, while it was snowing. The snow did not melt when it hit the lenses, but coated them.

Re: the newest thing NOT HID / but LED

LOL Tom

I've had a chance to play with some of the new Hella LED lamps, and while the theory behind them is great (and it is awesome to see it applied to headlamps), I'm still not convinced. With as new as the technology is, there is a lot of room for improvement. Personally, I'd give it another year or 3 before doing this myself, but thats just my 2 cents (YMMV of course). On the SVX though, I'd was more than happy with the HIR 9011/9012 bulbs over HID kits considering the legality standpoint and my personal experiences. Then again I'm not fond of HID's in the first place...Nothing worse than being blinded from behind when driving at night.

Me too. I have them in both of mine and I really like them. A much bigger improvement over the regular bulbs than I guess most people think. And I like not having the extra junk in the engine bay that comes with the HIDs. Although I guess LEDs will also have this advantage? In general I think LEDs are the future for sure.

Most people with hids in their cars also do not adjust the angle and beam of it so it shoots right into the oncoming persons face.

Re: the newest thing NOT HID / but LED

A lot of problems with glare arise when installing HIDs in reflector-based headlights, as opposed to projector-based units.

Ask anyone here what happens when you put HID bulbs in your high beams. Unwanted, scattered light everywhere.

.
Completely understood. However this same thing can (and will most often than not) happen with a halogen projector and an HID retrofit kit. From my experience and understanding, the HID aftermarket kits are 100% illegal from an on and off road standpoint, as per federal law due to the fact that most do not come with a proper housing/projector setup. It is completely legal however to take an existing HID setup (from say, an Audi, etc) and retrofit it to the car you choose, provided you use the HID projector lamps from said housing (or use proper modules like the Hella bi-xenon/xenon high and low 90mm lamps).
