Re: Save this SVX!! (NorCal)
I think people are getting a little tired of the whole "buy my car or else [I'll junk it/I'll part it out] approach".
Why not just list it in the for sale section using the template and give it a little time.

Re: Save this SVX!! (NorCal)
It isn't my choice - my friend has until the end of the month to retire the car - the State of California runs out of money then, and the program to retire cars ends. If it were up to me, I'd swap the cat out of my other SVX, pass emissions, then buy the car from him.

Re: Save this SVX!! (NorCal)
I'm sure that you will find that "standard" is a misquote.
There are a great majority of vehicles in any country that typically last much longer with far less damage to most of the finishes after many more years than 17. And, yes, the "Junk it" approach is getting quite old. That's my op.

Re: Save this SVX!! (NorCal)
My friend will scrap the car - he doesn't give a crap about it anymore. Obviously everyone is more concerned about my thread wording, so I've removed it. Sorry to have wasted your time.

Re: Save this SVX!! (NorCal)
Great.
So the wonderful People's Republic of California is prompting the destruction of this rare car, because some government program will stop paying out at the end of the month, because the state is too damn stupid to keep it's books in order? That is fantastic. [ultimate, mega sarcasm.] I know you did what you could, Roo... and I wish someone had jumped at the chance to use the car. I was concerned that "Cash for Clunkers" was going to do this sort of thing, but evidently that isn't even required. Do you know if the salvage yard is automatically going to crush the car? or will they keep it for salvage parts inventory? Now that you have removed the description, I can't refer back to it and see if the car is even in running condition, even if it doesn't meet California's fascistic standards. How much is the salvage yard going to pay for the car? Can nobody here match that, and take the car out of that insane state? out of 15000 cars, how many of them are still viable? it seems like more of them are damaged every week, including one recently sold NEAR where I live that was totaled shortly afterward. Re: Save this SVX!! (NorCal)
Man if I find a $4000 SVX in whatever condition over here I would buy it instantly
I envy you guys with those SVXi prices... Only IF I can get them inside the country (a car should be either 8 years old max or the last year manufacturing is more than 30 years old)

Re: Save this SVX!! (NorCal)
I too can not see what the car is or was. California has already run out of money, so what's new. The "Cash of Klunkers" was just started, so why is is out of money so fast. I didn't know it had even started yet.

Re: Save this SVX!! (NorCal)
Cash for clunkers hasn't started yet, it was just signed by Obama the other day.
But evidently California is forcing this car off the road by some method, and Roo's friend doesn't want to deal with it otherwise, and is seemingly ready to hand it over to salvage, possibly for crushing, which would be a HORRIFIC waste. The unique glass alone is probably worth keeping the car intact for parts, even if not a single mechanical part of the car works otherwise. And I doubt the car is THAT bad. I wish someone could just get the car OUT of California, and either put it back on the road, or at least keep other SVXs on the road. |

Re: Save this SVX!! (NorCal)
This isn't "Cash for Clunkers", it's a California program that buys back vehicles with failed smog checks and retires them to the crusher/salvage yard.
Final attempt, since Roo (my husband) has already given up on this. Pics here: http://www.sonic.net/~roo/SVX/index.html There is absolutely nothing wrong with this car besides a couple of cosmetic issues (peeling clearcoat, torn driver seat) and obviously the emissions issue. This is a California car, so there is no rust whatsoever! Our friend has put over $10k into this car over the past few years; the engine itself has less 30k miles on it. The transmission has also been replaced/rebuilt, and it received a brandnew alternator only a few weeks ago. It drives perfectly, looks beautiful (if you can overlook the paint issue), and does not deserve to be scrapped. If someone can find it in their heart to save this car before Friday, our friend will let it go for $1500 firm. Otherwise it will head to its final resting place on Friday, which makes me want to cry just thinking about it...

Re: Save this SVX!! (NorCal)
This is not a cash for clunkers program. California has a vechicle retirement program for cars that fail smog. The car has to be owned by you for two years and be driveable. When the car is scrapped everything goes to the shredder except for fluids and the battery.

Re: Save this SVX!! (NorCal)
If I were not 2000 miles away, I would probably try to rescue this car, just on principle to save this car from the wrecker. It PAINS me to think that politics is destroying this machine.
But I have to ask... is the salvage yard paying 1500$ to scrap it? Why would that be firm, if he can't get that money from the salvage yard. I know this sucks for the owner. I sympathize with spending money on the car over recent years... but the cards are down, if the difference is someone driving the car away, or leaving it to be scrapped, and the owner doesn't care about it being scrapped at this point... A dollar over the salvage yard's offer should buy this car, and get it out of that insane state, and keep it on the road. Is there anyone who needs to travel from that area to the midwest, and could drive the car that far? I would have a hard time making 1500$ available to buy the car, let alone a plane ticket to get out there, and drive it back... How much do cars cost to ship? This is actually making me viscerally angry that political policy is having this effect, both on the current owner having their car made monetarily worthless, and the prospect of destroying a rare, and viable, if not in great shape, machine like this. I want one of these cars... Are there going to be any left???? Last edited by BoxerFanatic; 06-24-2009 at 11:37 AM. |

Re: Save this SVX!! (NorCal)
I agree $1 over what the state is willing to pay should be enough. If your friend is set on $1500 he or she is only looking for money and does not care about the car.
