sort of O/T
this was quoted from another automotive forum:
Lamborghini Portofino The year was 1988. The Viper hadn't been shown yet. There was no Intrepid. And LH wasn't even recognized as "Last Hope" yet. In fact, the most exotic offering Chrysler had was Lamborghini that Lee Iacocca stood proudly beside when "he liked the car so much, he bought the company". What a leader! What's the Story? The Portofino featured trademark Lamborghini gull-wing doors (the rears opened in suicide fashion) and a new 3.5L 225 hp 24v V6 engine powering all four wheels. The tires were 225/50-16 (wide at that time...). Although the concept never became a Lamborghini production vehicle, it clearly influenced future Chrysler styling. The Chrysler Design Studio concept clearly foreshadowed the cab-forward theme for the 1993 LH cars, especially the Intrepid. But other features of this car also came to to reach more humble production models. Sharp eyes will look at the headlights and instantly recognize them ... as foglights that were later used on the 1989 Daytona Shelby or Spirit ES. I'm sure some of you may think it's odd for me to look for things like this ... but surely there's someone out there who cares... And what about that interior design? Doesn't it look similar to the redesigned interior on the 1990 Daytona & LeBaron? Notice especially the instrument pod, which housed the light switches, wipers, fog lamps and - yes - even the turn signal indicator, just like the Daytona & LeBaron. As for the window-within-a-window treatment? Only the Subaru SVX decided to put that into a regular production car ... unsuccessfully. There is a great story surrounding this car. While being transported, the semi-truck hauling the million-dollar concept vehicle was involved in an accident and the Portofino was "written-off". But it was put back together piece by piece until it was in "better condition" than before the accident. Where is the Portofino Now? The Portofino's new home is parked upstairs at the Walter P. Chrysler Museum in Auburn Hills, Michigan. http://www.pinnaclecda.com/DaimlerCh...0Portofino.htm Pics here notice in the middle where they mention the "unsuccessful" SVX. If you look at the link its disgusting to think they even tried to relate the svx to it. Last edited by I_Alcyone_I; 05-09-2002 at 01:09 AM. |

My son says has friends make fun of the SVX window in a window. It seems a lot of people do not like this idea at all. My son says he doesn't like the windows because the air doesn't come in and keep you cool. The reason they made the windows!!!

Well, the writer probably means that the SVX was unsuccessful. In that it didn't make Subaru any money, sure. But the sentence says that the windows were implemented unsuccessfully, and that's just not accurate. Why are the windows the way they are o nthe SVX? 1. Larger windows for better visibility. Success. 2. Upper glass can the be curved to blend with the roof better. Mission accomplished. 3. Passengers dont get wet with windows open in the rain. Sure, check, even though I think that this had to be made up by an SOA marketing guy. How is this unsuccesful?

When I read that I was thinking . . .
. . . that the windows are the most successful feature on the car. Well, that's not quite true. For me, the whole car is just a really successful package.
I just took a short trip to a nearby town. The weather is mid-60's. A little too warm to have the windows up. In any other car, I would have opened the rear windows and turned up the heater to some unknown level that I would have to play with for an hour to get right, and still put up with the buffetting/resonating. In some cars, doing that is like sitting inside a sub-woofer. Since I was driving the SVX, I just opened the front windows and set the thermostat on 73. Gee, it just blew the heck out of my left sleeve. Comfort level - perfection ! I don't deserve this car!

Guess I'm off topic here already, if someone doesn't post in the first 30 minutes then the topic has already gone off to something other than the original post!!!
But I remember seeing that concept car in a auto mag a while back (didn't realize it was THAT long ago!!!). Looking at it now it is pretty ugly, but the pic I saw had all four doors up and a straight on side view and it looked pretty cool. I'm not sure they are called gull-wing doors properly, they are the style the Diablos have that just swing straight up and forward rather than up and out. But like the article says, the rear doors swung up and back, suicide door fashion. And there was no center pillar! So it was just this huge opening in the middle to access front and back seats with doors up on the front and back like a big Swiss Army knife!!! Wish they had included a pic of it on this link. Now back to the defense of window in a window and/or who is worthy of the SVX!

I would have my alternator by now, but Tacoma Subaru never returns my calls or my emails. Next week I plan on ordering my rotors, alternator, plugs and timing belt - if they don't return my calls I will have no choice but to pay Ann Arbor Subaru's significantly higher prices.

Gee, I hate to hear all this stuff about subaruparts.com, after I've built them up. But, then, that was when Scott was handling things.
I believe that 1stsubaruparts may be Scott's new venture. Perhaps I'll be shifting my business if subaruparts can't get their feces together.
