Yeah come on OT this is important scientific stuff!

Last time this thread was active there was talk about different databases to track all these cars. Anyone know what's out there right now as far as that goes?

I think it would be interesting to keep an ongoing list of VINs and information on every SVX in the "known" world. Like a census.

Of course everyone here would add their VINs, and then also any SVX that is come across. If one is in a wrecking yard we come across, add the VIN and mark it as officially deceased. Heck, even jot down the VIN of one we see in the parking lot and then note it's general location on the list as well.

Done in a consistent format, the entire thing would be searchable so the same VIN wouldn't get entered twice. If the same car was come across again by a "census taker", it's existing info would just be updated, complete with the date of update in the notes.

Over time this could give us an idea of what's sitll out there, and how many are confirmed off the roads, how many unknowns, etc.

Sorry, just working on two huge databases this morning at work and my thoughts drifted to SVX stuff.

Do they both share complete VIN as the common key? If so, get them both into Excel. Rearrange the columns on both spreadsheets so the first column is VIN and all the other columns line up the same (ie, Column A on both is VIN, Column B on both is Year, etc). If one file has more fields than the other just add empty "dummy" columns on the other for now so they have the same amount of columns, or just move all the extra columns on the more detailed report to the end.

Now with your two similar files, copy the entire spreadsheet of one and paste it into the other in the first spot of Column A that is available. Now you have one long list that is a combo of both files.

Now to identify the duplicate rows. Go up to Data on the menu and hit sort. Sort by VIN. If the formats match, all the duplicates should now be next to each other in the list. Insert a new column immediately after Column A. In this new blank column type a formula for finding dupes in cell B3, assuming you have 1 header row.

Type: =IF(A3=A2,"X"," ")

This formula will leave a "X" in cell B3 if the VIN in A3 matches the VIN in A2. If they do not match, it will leave it blank.

You then copy the formula from cell B3 down through the entire spreadsheet. This can easily be done by clicking the cell so it is highlighted, move the cursor to the bottom right corner of the highlighted border until a little "+" appears. Double-click the "+" and the formula will automatically copy all the way down the spreadsheet to as far as there is still data in column A. As the formula calculates, you will see the "X"'s start to appear.

Now that you have your Column B showing all the duplicate fields, you can focus research onto these by just scanning your eyes over the file and stopping whenever you see the big "X". Or if you don't care about any extra info one sheet has over the other, you can just delete all the X fields quickly by Sorting By that column and moving them all to one section and deleting them all at once.

Hope this helps, but now that I typed all this I have a suspicion that most of the data you have does not include VIN or any other common field that can be used this way. Oh well.

Two weeks ago 2-92s, 2-94s and a 96.

Now just the 96, soon to be refreshed by YT and the AWD crew.

YT's count just jumped by 4 (one yet to be picked up).

An old timer tractor collector once told me, "The secret to a happy marriage and a great tractor collection is to be sure to paint 'em all the same color so she won't notice 'em".

Mine were all claret or bordeaux.

Check my signature. The only ones that aren't listed are the rolled-over black car in our driveway that used to belong to Henry (not rvnmaniac) from Baltimore, now a parts car, and one in Cincinnati ('92 Teal) at his brother's (Mark5) house.

I believe that puts us at 10 now, 8 of which run and/or are under repair.
