why do you say that?

i mean i don't like to put anything but non-ox in my cars anyway, but why do you think it will be bad for SVX's. besides the obvious drop in mpgs

Re: I don't think this is good for SVXs

Caught snippets of this story on NPR this morning. All cheap gas around here is E-10 and that's what I use exclusively, but I'm not supportive of higher percentages. (I believe the SVX owner's manual stipulates up to 10% ethanol, no methanol.)

Besides, fuel from Big Ag food crops is a lousy substitute for Big Oil gasoline. Talk to me when somebody devised an economical, scalable means to get ethanol from kitchen waste and grass clippings.

The fuel system in the SVX was never designed to handle more than 10% ethanol. More ethanol could cause damage to the fuel system, exhaust system, or just overall catastrophic engine failure.

^ yea and i think your just getting carried away. i was hoping for descriptive and more detailed explanation of what it could actually happen. Like what 5% more ethanol actually does to working parts. Don't wana start a flame war. just want to see what people actually know about ethanol, not just general paranoia.

Re: I don't think this is good for SVXs

Ethanol just sucks because of the horrible gas mileage. There is a guy locally who has been running E85 in a late 80's carolla for over 8 years and 100k miles. Never had an issue. The only real issues is with the fuel lines, etc since it is more corrosive over time.

Re: I don't think this is good for SVXs

Up untill recently I bought all of my 92/93 octane gasoline from the closest gas station because they did not sell gasoline with ethanol.
On Christine I would consistantly get 20 MPG after two ECUTune chips.
The gas station recently made the decision to sell gas with 10% ethanol only becaust the government made it too hard for a small gas station to aquire REAL gasoline!
At 10% ethanol, I lost 1.5 gallons per fill up.
So now my SVX runs hotter,
I get worse gas mileage,
does not have the power that it USED to have,
meat prices went up,
global warming has been increased,
people is Mexico are now starving because corn products are being used to,

How do you politely say that the government is using ears of corn to;
probe our limits!

I'm not completely uneducated about use of ethanol in gas and using e85 in vehicles.

Re: I don't think this is good for SVXs

By next year there won't be any stations in PA which are legally allowed to sell non eth. gas for highway use. Got the letter at work about a month ago that our supplier was forced to change.

Why is ethanol bad in higher percentages? Runs leaner as there isn't the same energy content as gas which leads to hotter running temps. Poorer mileage, corrosive to the entire fuel system and it tends to "clean the varnish off the engine which might seem good in certain circumstances but for aging cars not so good. I don't know what everyone here is complaining about. At least you don't need to put in lead additives.

.

This may be of some use.

Listing of ethanol-free gas stations in the United States

Maryland is shown, but you can click on any state to see what is available.

Re: I don't think this is good for SVXs

i've seen that link on my old car club before. ethanol is way worse on cars from the 50s. you have to make sure they are ethanol free, some of them are just older stations that haven't put up the proper signage. always ask first.
