Re: Help! Broken Trans Rear Housing(pics)

ok, subaru said id have to wait till at least monday for that gasket. they said to use three bond(and to be honest, the guy didnt seem that bright) on any mating surfaces. thing there is, i have an unused tube of three bond. yes? no?

if yes, how do i use it? all the writing is in japanese. do i put it on both surfaces and let it sit for 5 min? 10 min? one surface and 5 min? whats the thought here?

Don't take this as an asshat comment but...

Why not just do it right the first time and not worry about it after that?

Re: Help! Broken Trans Rear Housing(pics)

well, i figured if its good enough for the trans pan, its good enough for the housing. i cant believe subaru told my brother that no one made trans pan gaskets, and sold him that for like 20 or 30 dollars. and my brother listened. ah well.

anyhow, aside from that, im facing another problem. when you split the trans and read extension housing, you have the wire which was easy, but theres also a spring, a small rod and a thick metal part. when i got them apart on the first trans, they just fell out(not broken). on the other trans, i we slow to note their position, but still, the thick metal piece just fell out onto my drain pan screen. any help with how that goes back on?

as for the trans, it just has to hold up till i send the jdm ra trans (not gear set, the whole trans off a jdm type ra! for 300 dollars, with a flywheel, shifter assy, rear pinion gear) to rallispec to have them replace 2nd and reassemble it. after that, its back to collecting the rest of the stuff for the swap. at that point, im giving my brother this stock trans so he can put it in whatever svx he finds with a blown trans.

.
Grasshopper,
what you have discovered is the parking pawl, it is installed with the hole at the bottom, and shaped like an F without the lower horizontal line.
It slides over the round dowell.
The spring has to be set to hold the F away from the drum that ingages when the car is put into park.
So, the spring is pushing the pawl counterclockwise away from the drum.
Does this make sence?
If not call me at 301-707-2837.

Re: Help! Broken Trans Rear Housing(pics)

side note, the part of the trans that sticks out of the housing, where the drive shaft connects had some rattling. this is on my old blow trans btw, but i pulled that part off, and pieces of metal fell out. big pieces. ill get photos tomorrow, for those interested or curious. i wanted to get more pics after disassembly of the old trans, but i told Nate id give him the old one to tear down, so hopefully, hell take lots of pics, i want to see what happens to the trans when they go bad!

another side note, as thats what i seem to do, but the part where the dipstick slides in to the trans above the oil pan, it has one small bolt, but when i was puting that on, i got it about half way down, no resistance, and it just snapped clean off. strange, because that bolt looked great! if i clean that up, where the two join, any suggestions on what i could use to bond the two? jb weld? sealer? 3-bond?

Loosen the tailshaft untill the driveshaft can be turned by hand.
Then continue to turn the driveshaft by hand as you slowly snug a bolt, skip two, snug the third, skip two, etc.

If you tighten them in this maner, all the while turning the driveshaft, it should continue to turn when tight, unless you messed up.

If you have assembled it correctly, hopefully you can just loosen the bolts, as prevously described.
(You rotate the driveshaft to make sure the clutch plates all get lined up.)

THAnks. I thought that once the shaft with the driveshaft connector was in all the way back, it was fully seated? Is that where the clutch plates are?
