Did I just buy the Famous 161 mile Ebay Car?

OK... here is the story. About three weeks ago I saw an ad on Autotrader stating that Downtown Subaru in Oakland had a 1997 Red LSi for sale with 33,000 miles on the clock. I called them to see if they still had it and a few days later drove up to the Bay Area (for business anyway) and checked it out.

It was in fantastic (considering the age) shape... drove like new. The only problem was the mirrors and side "garnish" panels we faded. Also the hood badge was missing. I asked what the deal was with this car and had a look at the car fax report:

CarFax Report

The report showed that this car sat at a dealer in Colorado, "Shortline Automotive" from 1997-2002 with 168 miles on the odometer when it was sold to an airline pilot (a customer of the dealership) in Alameda California. See Carfax.

From 2002-2009 it accumulated 32,000 some odd miles and serviced only at Downtown Subaru in Oakland. They showed me the full service history as well.

I did a little investigating, because the carfax showed this weird amount of time and such little miles that I thought for certain that this car had to be a subject of some thread or another on this board. And here is what I found:

http://www.subaru-svx.net/forum/showthread.php?t=3650

http://www.subaru-svx.net/forum/show...48&postcount=2

http://www.subaru-svx.net/forum/show...6&postcount=20

I think this is the car... resurfaced now with 33,000 miles!

What I have done to the car is the following:

I repainted the garnish and mirror housings... did it the right way had my paint/body guys take it all off the car. I ordered an "Alcyone" badge to replace the missing Subaru Badge.

What I will do:

I want to replace the wheels with OEM stock ones once I find a set that are in good enough condition. I need to replace the two front struts. I want to install a transmission cooler, and lastly take care of separating piece of rubber molding on the drivers door.

Other than that the car drives perfectly... like new. It will be garaged, driven not very often and shown off. No mods, no nuthin'!

David

Wow! I'm so glad to hear an update on this car! I can't help but imagine that you purchased it for considerably less than learjeff!

Great find!

But in the age of 3M double-sided tapes, what sort of idiot dealership drills into the fiberglass and uses POP RIVETS to attach a dealership badge?

Making sure you never take it off.

Re: Did I just buy the Famous 161 mile Ebay Car?

Glad to read it'll be garage kept and driven little. I always was afraid to leave my Legacy on the Venice streets overnight when I lived there. I can't imagine the paranoia that such a pristine car would elicit in me. Next time it's out to show off let me know, I'll be there with a camera and a smile.

Congrats on a great find.

I thought about removing it... I eventually will. But left it on for now as it is part of it's history...

I think they had 3M tape in 1997?! This whole dealer badge thing amazes me... it's such a midwest/east coast thing... we never had that sort of thing out here on the west coast.

I read that and all I can think of is Ferris Bueller's Day Off

I got a big kick out this post by Ron Mummert in that 1st thread.
