Shooting at Fort Hood

http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/us_fort_hood_shooting

Quote:
FORT HOOD, Texas – The U.S. Army says 12 people have been killed and 31 wounded in a shooting rampage on the Fort Hood Army base in Texas. Lt. Gen Bob Cone said at a news conference that one shooter has been killed and two suspects were apprehended on Thursday. He says they are all U.S. soldiers.

The shooting began around 1:30 p.m. Cone says that all the casualties took place at the base's Soldier Readiness Center where soldiers who are about to be deployed or who are returning undergo medical screening.

He says the primary shooter used two handguns in the attack.

Hmm, seems some people weren't in favor of being deployed for the war. Imagine that. Still, there are better ways to go about your protest.

They released the guy's name. It was Muslem. They didn't say if he was originally Muslem or converted. They haven't said it is terrorism related yet or not. They said they are still investigating the motives.

A person's name cannot be Islamic... Islam is a religion, just like people cannot be Jewish as a race. Sorry, people never seem to realize this and it bothers me. He had a middle eastern name.

Yes he recently converted to Islam in VA before heading to Fort Hood. Not only that but he has a PhD in psychology. (Hence how he was a Major in the army)

I'm not sure that's completely true. Most converts to Islam change their names to reflect their religion and not necessarily middle eastern location. Though not every one with a middle eastern name is muslim now days people link the two automatically. Right or wrong.

Actually jewish is both a race and a religion Jews trace their family lines back to Abraham. So they are Hebrew a group of the semitic race. Not to say all Jewish religion people are or can be traced back to Abraham since people now are free to convert. However, "true" jews are hebrew in race. If that makes any sense though feel free to speak up if I am wrong.

Although this guy was a Muslim, and the news says he acted alone he was a disgruntled Muslim Soldier. He disagreed with the war. He was also probably vocal about it and his views which definitely would not make him any friends in the military. Obviously it wasn't something like the enemy had him as a sleeper cell type or it was planned out for him by others. I think his views and comments should have had him on some kind of watch or to be monitored list. I don't think with his views and comments as well as his sympathy towards those we are fighting and his admiration for other incidents where soldiers have killed each other that I would want to go anywhere near a combat zone with him or anyone like him. If it came down to it I would rather have the most flaming gay guy watching my back than someone who sympathizes and agrees with our enemy. IMO.

I love how the media somehow sees his religion being relavent, as if thosoe of islamic background don't already have enough of a social stigma. I fear history will repeat itself again.

Re: Shooting at Fort Hood

Never mind religion. Never mind politics. Never mind not being on board with the mission. Never mind imminent deployment to a war zone. Only a sick, twisted ghoul walks into a crowd and starts shooting; there can be no "reason."

Here's to the survivors, and their comrades and loved ones, and those who were lost.

Re: Shooting at Fort Hood

Its interesting to hear what all you guys think about this. And I do appreciate everyone's thoughts (and prayers if you're doing that).

I am stationed here at Fort Hood and was actually there in that building where this happened only 30 minutes before. Just my luck I always miss all the fun, lol.

This, of course, was not the first incident like this involving soldiers who are or who have converted to Islam. In light of the muslim teachings encouraging the killing of the 'infidels' (us), I think it would be appropriate for authorities to keep a more watchful eye on those who are Islamic in our ranks. Regardless of how much we try to not discriminate against any religion, over and over again members of that religion are killing us. And that can not be ignored.

It seems that the FBI might have been dragging their feet if they had him on their radar screen for 6 months.

Re: Shooting at Fort Hood

I agree with the watchful eye on muslim soldiers, thats not discrimination just precautionary surveillance, the same type we ALL go thru in banks, malls, and the local convenience store. This guy obviously wasn't discriminated against (being a major) but they ignored some warning signs.

Is that religious profiling, sure. But on the same token what religion do the guys overseas use as a reason to kill our soldiers over there? It shouldn't be grounds for being passed over for a promotion or unduly harassed, but it should be cause for a raised eyebrow and a little more observation...... just as walking around town with a pistol on your belt would be..... its not illegal and not immoral, but it would still cause some folks to be a little suspicious of your intentions or mindset.

I've accepted the reality that we have ALL been wiretapped to some degree, recorded, analyzed, surveilled, scrutinized ( CARNIVORE or Narus) so being a religious or other minority does not preserve your right to privacy any more than being "white" or non-religious.

If they can do it to me, then they can do it to Muslims too.
