wrecked the svx... 14 years ago

so i sourced a wrx trans found itbs i wanna pick up, started working on the car, got excited, had big plans... then i found out from my brother that when he had the car, he had it carfaxed on his boss's carfax account. i just found this out... VERY recently.

in 1995 when the car had a whoping 4k miles on it, it got in an accident. apperantly it was wrecked pretty bad, my brother had said it was totaled. he bought it in 2006 if your wondering.

he doesnt know the details, but now im afraid to drop money on it. how can i find out if theres any major structural damage? car ran and drove fine before the trans decided to give, it just had really tight steering.

what would you do? give it up? keep working on it? im tempted to not risk it and just get my used sportbike instead, but i absolutely love the car. the only reason i knew it had work done before is because when i started taking the interior out, i found paint marker writing in the interior panels, i chalked that one up to a broken panel inside or something. guess not.

please, any imput would be awesome, im lost here, i absolutely love this thing, and dont want to part with it, but i dont know if im just throwing away money now! does anyone have a carfax account, where i can give you the vin and get more details?

If you have not had problems with it so far except for the transmission, I would continue with the project. Nothing has changed (not that you mentioned), so I would not worry about it. If you had problems with it, that would explain why if might have, but that isn't the case. Good luck with the project.

Take my word for it, if your car had problems, you'd notice.

I noticed wrinkled sheetmetal under the hood, mis-fitting body panels, uneven seams, the roof not fitting the top edge of the door, and poor quality paint work on various parts of my car when I bought it.

A shoddy repair will show itself, especially in places that aren't outwardly obvious. But a good quality repair, especially an extensive and high quality job, as was likely done to a car with only 4K miles at the time... is likely to be much more replacement than repair of damaged parts... and if done right, should be square, and sound.

If the car looks good on close examination, there shouldn't be a problem. And even if it isn't perfect, it is still worth putting a gearbox into, to make the car drivable for a good long time to come.

Even with the obvious damage my car has, it is still a fine driver, and will continue to be. Granted, with my car's damage, I would choose another, straighter-condition car as a restoration/modification candidate to put $$$ into. If yours is straight, as is, there shouldn't be much of a problem.

oh, as far as the paint is concerned... well, the clear coat is peeling everywhere and the bumpers and sideskirts are blotchy black because the paint was peeling. other than that, it looked good. i do want to know what carfax says though.

Here is my opinion on carfax:

Carfax makes their money on causing fear and panic among consumers. They advertise that any car that has been in an accident is a bad car. They advertise that any dealership who is not signed up with carfax is shady and should not be trusted. In turn, carfax then makes us (car dealers) become subscribed to their service. What does this cost? $500.00 a month! It is the only business in which they can generate more and more revenue by bad-mouthing their biggest customers.

That being said, a car that has been in accident is not necessarily a bad car. The car has been on the road for FOURTEEN YEARS since this accident occurred. Obviously, it's a fine car.

Stop buying into the carfax hype, and start using some common sense!

+1, Carfax cant say jack spit about how the engine and drivetrain were taken care of or that regular maintenance was done.

Re: wrecked the svx... 14 years ago

One of our friends brought her new (to her) Scion tC by the shop to show it off, one of the first things my boss said is, "You know it was wrecked, right?". She said the CarFax didn't say anything. Quarter had been repaired, door had been repaired, fender had been replaced and both bumper covers were replaced. It also had some simple aftermarket side skirts that were hiding a little rocker damage.

Of course, it will most likely be fine and she never would have noticed, but it just shows CarFax isn't omnipotent.

Re: wrecked the svx... 14 years ago

In addition to the above comments, I would add that since this was a specialty vehicle, and had only 4k on it when the accident happened, it seems VERY likely that it was taken to the dealer (or specialty shop) for repairs. Most likely it wasn't Bondo'ed together by Uncle Jim in the garage. Very likely repairs were done at capable shop, using new parts, and based on it being Carfax and nothing else that told you the car was wrecked, seems like it was repaired completely.

* As far as "wrecked pretty bad" - usually the most you'll get out of Carfax is "Vehicle Disabled" which covers a LOT of ground, including the driver simply didn't choose to drive the vehicle from the accident scene. Typically a "totalled vehicle" would have a salvage or branded title of some sorts with it, which makes a bad Carfax kind of a non-issue doesn't it?

But, considering the 14 years it's already driven since the accident, I'd say plunge ahead, enjoy your car...

actually, when I was on the 350z phase for a while, they did show dealer info for oil changes and brakes, etc. It looks like it does obtain dealer service information.

It does obtain information from SOME dealers, and what it says is usually very cryptic.
