svx...absolutely love it in the snow
dont have the greatest tires, but still do fine

when im driving i feel really "balanced"; hard to describe but easy to understand when you feel it

for some reason, the SVX and some cheap Winterhandler snow tires gave me more confidence than my LGT and Blizzaks do.

remember, AWD does not help with braking, cornering, and downhills on ice. good snow and ice tires will help a little, studded ones more so.

Please include sizing specifications. I would think a narrower tire with a higher profile than what is recommended by Subaru. Could be wrong. Help?

Thanks.
I personally like the Continental Contiextreme Contacts. Those worked very well for me.

Nokian WR is an all season with a snow tire rating.

Re: Is something wrong here? (slipin' n slidin')

There is no such thing as an "all season" tire. If you live somewhere that often has decent snowfalls, sub-freezing temps, and all that other winter fun, there is no substitute for a good set of dedicated winter tires.

For my snow tires I went to a 205/55/16 instead of the stock 225/50/16 size. A bit narrower to dig through the snow, same overall height.

i forgot my SVX snow tires were narrower than stock - maybe that's why it felt more sure-footed than the LGT.

Actually you're wrong. (Untill 2 years ago you were right.) Nokian WR and WRG are "Four Season" tires and they have been tested and carry the Mountain with Snow Flake symbol required for winter tires.

Their compound also does well during summer season.

I have Nokian summer and winter tires on both my cars. Love them!

This is best for true snow conditions.

But this is best in another thread.

Brett, what the auto 4wd SVX is very good at is traction. It is brilliant at giving the most torque to the wheels that have grip, that's why it accelerates well in slippy or loose conditions. When you have the speed/momentum built up the computer can't help you any more, the Laws of Physics apply to cornering and stopping, so be careful.

[There is a thread on here way back where a member slid his car on ice into a kerb and deformed the steering geometry. Very costly. You won't want to be doing that ]

If you want to improve your ability to handle snow, the cheapest way is to buy two chains for the front wheels. Do NOT put chains on all 4, it's against manufacturer's recommendations.

Have fun,

Joe

Re: Is something wrong here? (slipin' n slidin')

Addendum:

If you could afford it, the 205 Nokians is a way better solution to take. You can have fun all year round.

Re: Is something wrong here? (slipin' n slidin')

From cars101.com about the SVX:
Quote:
All-Wheel-Drive with viscous Limited Slip rear differential using a 90/10% power split front/rear, which transfers up to a 50/50% power split for maximum traction if the wheels start to slip.
which is like most other 4EAT Subarus.
(I have a MT 2008 Forester XT which is 50/50 all the time)

Re: Is something wrong here? (slipin' n slidin')

From what I now understand, there is a mod to make the SVX 50/50 all the time? Would this be a good or bad mod to do?

Re: Is something wrong here? (slipin' n slidin')

I'm not sure about the SVX but I know that on the 4EAT Foresters, if you put it in 1 or 2 (not D) you get 50/50.

Re: Is something wrong here? (slipin' n slidin')

I have the Toyo Garit tires http://www.toyo.com/docs/tires/tires...ategory=winter on our SVX and love them. I like them better than the Blizzak's on our Baja Turbo. I have BFG traction T/A's for the summer and they are ok for winter but the Toyo's are night and day difference.
