Dear Admin, How hard would it be to do this?

So Im a member on a few different car forums, mainly this one, and FocusFanatics (we own a few Foci, lol)

Anyways, I always liked how FF had their forums layed out. So my question is, how much work would be involved in doing something like this? Im not saying I dont like how this one is layed out, but I think the FF one is nicer looking. Ive never researched into how much work it involves changing settings on forums, even changing the entire layout. Ive designed a few websites, and know that a revamp can take quite a bit of work. Anyways, doesnt hurt to ask now does it? If by chance something is to happen, and a new layout is put onto the site (not saying now) I would like to be a part of it. That is, if you are willing to take the help

Ive always wanted to give back, for everything that has been helpful here. Im a poor college student, and cant afford to donate to the site... I would if I had the spare cash, but I dont. And I would like to give back somehow... I dont know, maybe you can think of something.

Anyways. How hard would it be to make our post layout look like this?

On an added note... What about the rep and buy-sell-trade ratings? I think those are nice features as well. Though some people... like Tom... would need a limiter on the number, so some of us done have such low counts

How hard would it be? It would be as hard as clicking a check box to enable the old styles in the vBulletin software. That being said, we are using the current layout, as opposed to the legacy layout.

There has been something in the works for exactly what you ask. I am not sure where Chris is with the implementation, however.

I find them interesting, but you already see (or don't see) the end result.

I do like how it keeps the text area of the post clean and by itself in the right hand column, and all the avatars, quotes, and knick knacks on the left. I'd have to see how it looks in an actual thread with multiple posts, but I'm assuming you could just focus on the right side and read the entire thread straight through without being interupted by pictures or signatures? That would actually be kinda cool. And then if someone wanted to look at your other stats, they can just glance to the left and see them. Again, I'd have to actually see it in action before I said which I liked better. But not worth my time since it wouldn't matter what I think anyway!

Signatures would still interrupt the conversation.

Yeah I got brave enough to go over there and peek at their forums and figured that out. It just so happened the first thread I looked in 90% of the participants didn't have any signature at all and it was actually VERY clean and nice to read. Then I came across one that did and saw the same interuption we have here. Oh well.

Are you just LOOKING for trouble today?

Change is bad, very very bad...

I guess if it really is a simple process to switch over and then back it might be an interesting experiment. But I'm pretty sure there would be lots of confusion and complaining.

Couldnt you just copy your code to say like a notepad doc or something? Just incase? Thats what I normally do when working on one of my sites. It really sucks if you dont, lol. Then if you screw it up, youve got nothing to go back to. Though like I said, Ive never looked into how forums work. The webpages I work on, are ones that Ive written 100% of the coding for, so I know how to work it. I should do some research on how forums work, lol.

And Troy, change isnt all bad, just some of it

We have worked hard on what we have now. I would hate to see us lose everything because of an experiment that went bad.

We are working on the For Sale feature, but have not gotten it done yet. Just need some more time to do it.

Chris T has been very busy as well.

Oh Im not saying that you guys havent worked hard. I know you have, I know how it goes trying to keep a site up and running to ones liking. Im not asking that it be done, I was just asking how hard it would be if it was tried. I agree, I dont want to see anything lost because of something as small as this.

You guys really deserve a lot for everything youve done. And I know everyone gets busy, and things happen. The for sale thing isnt a major issue, and look how long we've gone without it.
