Arrow Anyone plan on buying a Turbo Diesel Legacy

Subaru Boxer Diesel Makes History

Subaru unveiled the world's first Turbo Diesel Boxer Engine to the media in Spain ahead of its European debut this Spring. The 2.0 Subaru Diesel Boxer Engine will power both the Legacy and Outback models.
With diesel now taking over 70% of sales in many European countries, Subaru's European customers welcome the diesel addition to the Subaru lineup. Already, journalists are praising its power, quietness and performance. We are currently making modifications to the diesel so it meets the more stringent U.S. standards. Subaru diesel models should be domestically available in two to three years.

2008 Impreza WRX STI

In the last Insider, we introduced the 2008 Impreza WRX STI and made an error. The STI's DOHC intercooled, turbocharged Boxer Engine is actually 2.5 liters and pumps out an impressive 305 horsepower. That's .5 liters more than we originally attributed to this performance monger!

Subaru Hosts Dining Out For Life

Dining Out For Life, one of the nation's favorite ways to fight AIDS, returns on Thursday, April 24, 2008 for its 15th year. When you dine at one of the more than 3,000 participating restaurants on this day, a portion of your bill goes directly to a licensed HIV/AIDS service organization in your area. Incredibly, more than $2 million dollars a year is raised from this event to support the missions of agencies throughout North America.

Established in Philadelphia in 1990, Dining Out For Life is now held in 47 cities. Emmy Award winning food and wine connoisseur, Ted Allen, is spokesperson for the annual event. Allen is also a judge for Bravo's "Top Chef" and Food Network's "Iron Chef America."

Subaru's support of Dining Out For Life enables a national marketing campaign to increase awareness and participation in the event. In addition, Subaru vehicles are on loan to health care agencies in select cities to be used for patient transportation and community events.

Look for participating restaurants in your area and make your reservation today! (Some cities designate alternate dates for their event.)

Yeah, I noticed at my usual fuel stop yesterday that diesel was at $3.999. Don't believe I'd be interested in a diesel anything unless I had a friend in the restaurant business with lots of waste veggie oil to unload for free.

Diesel is $4.50 or more here in WA State. My Outback get 26 - 27mpg and the diesel might get 40 - 45 mpg. Still won't make it pay to get one.

Well a VW Passat turbodiesel easily gets 40 mpg plus or even 50 mpg from a 2.0. That's why they are outselling petrol over here. The equivalent petrol will do around 28.

[Now I appreciate our gallons are a bit bigger than US gallons, but the differential will be the same.]

Subarus sell in small numbers here, and don't hold their value because they have a "thirsty" reputation, and as of yet, no diesel in the range. I predict when the diesel becomes available here, they will take off in sales. Big time.

What's the story with your diesel being more expensive than petrol? They are both the same price here. Is your government taxing it high to make it difficult for imported turbodiesel sales?

Joe

I have no take on the diesel price disparity; that's a good question. Fact is, diesel used to be cheaper than gas. The price caught my eye the other day because at first glance, I thought $3.999 to be the posted price of premium gas.

Regular that morning was $3.239. That's a big difference.

It seems strange. They would both cost around the same to produce.

Also I expect most of your heavy road freight vehicles are diesel. Surely it must push up the delivered cost of all goods if the fuel the trucks use is an artificially high price? Strange economic logic to that.

Just for a laugh I converted our fuel price to American

For a US gallon of fuel we pay $7.11 at the moment. It's probably obvious we tend to favour economical cars!

If you use 10 gallons a week, that'll be $71, Sir, thank you. Use 20 gallons a week, $140 a week for gas, you can see fuel consumption getting to be an issue.

This is the primary reason why all of Europe are turning to turbodiesel engines, which give a genuine 50mpg. My friend Jim has a Fiat Panda 1.3 turbodiesel which gives him an easy 70 mpg!
