Hmmm, I have a problem.

Well, for some reason acrobat reader won't work. So I'm gonna have to ask for it here.

On the way to work today, i suddenly got a slew of warning lights. The battery, ABS, Steering, POWER, Brake Lamp, and e-brake lights all come on when the car is on. Is this just simply a bad alternator/battery? Or is this combination a sign of worse problems?

ditto to Hocrest's diagnosis. I just replaced my alternator two months ago and I had the same symptom.

Phew. An alternator is something I can do. I was worried I had messed up something in the engine. budbaer, could I ask how much you spent on your alternator, and how easy it was to get (like can I run to NAPA or must I quest across the world... lol)

The easiest thing to do is get a remanufactured alternator from Subaru. It comes complete with the pulley and has a 12 month warranty.

Most of the auto parts stores carry them but they are not as powerful as the stock 95A units. They usually go between 60-80A

The part number is 23700AA190R1 and goes for a little over $250.00 with the core charge. They will charge you about $50.00 for the core, which they will refund to you once you give them your old alternator.

Thanks for the help guys. Once I'm done with my shift... Well I'll figure out some way to get it home. I suppose I could just pull the alternator and call a friend.

I was stranded at the side of the road when it went so I was willing to take what I could get. Advance told me they could get one in 5 days for $150. The Subaru dealer literally laughed at me when I asked him if they had one in stock, he also said at least a week and $400. AutoZone said tomorrow and $200, so...... ding,ding,ding.... We have a winner. It came with a lifetime warranty and I'm glad it only took ten minutes to change because I figure that I'll have to redeem the warranty at some point.

If you can go without the car for a few days, the best option is to find a good auto electrical shop near you and have your alternator rebuilt. The cost should be $100 - $150 and you'll probably be getting a better rebuild than any of the chain stores.

Do be careful about what svxcess said; factory is 95A, some shops have alternators that will work, but are less amps.

Ensure you get at least 95A, the car is heavy on electrics. And if you have any notion of putting in big sound systems or amplifiers, now is the time to upgrade to an even higher amperage output alternator. The stock alternator can only just cope with what electrics are already on board.

I would find a different Stealership to deal with. List price on the alternator is around $300.00

I was out of town when it happened, 300 miles from home, and I called the Stealership in the Yellow Pages. I would never call them again for anything. I have a foriegn car parts guy here in town that gets me good deals.

my steelership told me $225 and it would have to be ordered so if you have to wait just have it rebuilt like was said above. it will be a superior end result and they can even upgrade like was stated above also its alot cheaper just my opinion

Well just as ya'll mentioned, I had that alternator out in five minutes. Easy. Now It's just finding a new one.

It just so happens that a 300ZX (Z32) has a free alternator that I might be able to scoop up. I'm wondering if it'll work.
