Tranny Weirdness??

I've begun noticing, that, when I park my car and turn off the key, there's some kind of "release" going on. IT's hard to describe. It's kind of like you "feel" the the transmission releasing, although the car doesn't try to move in park (as if the transmission is engaged), but -- well, it's almost that feeling when you're parked on a slight grade and you release the parking brake. I've never experienced anything like this before. Anybody have an idea? (I'm not going back to the tranny shop)

Unhappy Re: Tranny Wierdness?

Randy, This reminds me of one of the symptoms I had when my transfer clutch packs were binding. It's like the AWD is wound up and when you park it and shut down the tension is released. Of course I had intermittant shuddering on low speed turns which got much worse in time and after driving for a while. The problem set a code that I can find if you want. Dave

Thank you, Dave. I did my figure 8's in Reading, just in case I had any transfer clutch binding and, actually, hadn't noticed this anomoly before then. Maybe I'll do some more -- just in case.

I'm not getting the shudder you speak of (although, I'm quite familiar with it since it was prevelent in my mismatched Legacy tranny).

Yes, if you could find that code, I'd appreciate it.

Re: Re: Re: Wierdy Tranness

I had a code 24 = duty solenoid "C" (transfer clutch) but it was a mechanical problem. On my '96 my AT high temp light would flash on start up occasionally. Before there were any overt symptoms. Then the wind up and more and more shudder. Especially when really heated up. Are stored tranny codes flagged like that on a '92 or do you have to chase them? D.

They're flagged by the Power light. Thanks. I'll keep a lookout.

Figure 8s

Ok - I'll bite. What do the figure eights do for you or should I say the car? Is this something that all of us need to do for some preventative maintenance thing? Sounds good though. Gosh - I'm dizzy enough as it is, and what will the neighbors think?

Go Figure ...

Doing slow almost full lock figure eights is a way to excercise your transfer clutch packs or a way to detect if the clutch is binding. Also it attracts attention from onlookers. It can be done for either reason.

SLOW SLOW FIGURE 8's They are very boring and not any fun at all. Fast figure 8's with wheels squeeeeeling are fun and gets attention. The kind that you don't want.

I agree that it's the transfer clutches. That pack of clutches(and maybe others) is spring loaded. There is always some pressure on the pack at idle when your in gear, the higher the line pressure the higher the transfer pressure, and when you shift to P or N it's supposed to go to zero. Taking the pressure off the pack will allow the pressure plate to move under the spring pressure. However, your already in park when this happens so I got no clue. Some kind of a clutch pack spring thing. As long as the car keeps moving I would not worry about it.

Talk about wierdness

The braking function on my transmission with cruise control started to work this week. Hasn't worked in the past year and a half since I got the car Now it starts to work. Surprised the heck out of me I thought the car had developed a new problem until I realized what was going on. I always thought it was odd that the car would not slow down going down hills in cruise mode.

I thought it was a gas saving feature

Well, we've progressed from the "release" to the "power light." At this point, I'm too PO'd to say anything. I'll pull the codes tomorrow. Anybody wanna bet on the "solenoid C" scenario?

Significant Technical Input
I've been kinda sitting back, wondering if I should remind you about the 'noise' I heard while using my stethoscope on your t-case. I still haven't had the chance to listen to mine for a comparison.

I'm gonna burn 24 liquid candles of tranny fluid tonight for Aredub to appease the tranny gods.

Well, don't sit back man. Speak up. I can only vaguely remember your mention, but, then again, I was operating on two hours sleep and a two and a half hour drive. I was kinda spacey. What's really pi$$ing me off, is the fact that they replaced the solenoid pack in the first rebuild Then, when they had my car for 30 days, they installed another solenoid pack, which didn't cure THAT problem. What's a man to do?

The Meet Monster must die!!
