Maintenance-free transmission?

I read this morning of a new GM 4-speed automatic using a "new type of fluid" permitting "maintenance-free" operation under "normal driving conditions." Maybe this is old news to folks more in tune with the automotive world, but I've never heard of such.

Now transmissions are to be like sealed-top batteries; you just ignore 'em 'til they fail?

So, anybody know what makes these new automatics so special?

Don't know what makes em special... just that they don't have transmission drain plugs... a lot of guys will end up welding one on the pan so they CAN change the oil. It is stupid to think you don't need to

The tranny in my '66 Galaxie 500 didn't have a drain, either, but that didn't stop me from changing the fluid. Messy.

I'm just wondering if they're substantially different mechanically, or if there's anything truly innovative about this "new" fluid, if in fact there is a new ATF formulation out there.

It's a synthetic compound that doesn't break down unless it's exposed to some very high tempratures. It could work for a normal person, but don't count on going to Englishtown on a hot day and running a few times with no issues, especially after some mods.

people across the country don't always know what Englishtown is... For people outside of the tri-state area... it is a drag strip
