Which of your 7 'sences' could you do without??

I have spent the most of the last 3 days with 'eye' doctors.
As I was driving to the hardware store to get some screws for the latest home improvement, I turned on the wipers to get the 'mist' off of the windshield.
Nothing changed...

I called my eye doc that had done my exam on wed, ( 20-20) and told him what was happening. He had me back into his office on thursday, gave me a number in case it got worse, and said to 'take it easy for a few dats'.

I woke up this,( fri) am, looked out the window and said to myself. " It's foggy out", Then I closed my right eye, and looked again. It was NOT foggy out!

I called the DR, and was sent to an 'optimoligest' 75 miles away. and was given about 1 hour to get there!

The results of 2 hours of testing was, "you are getting old",, Things are wearing out!

I'm only 1/2 way to 108, I surely can't be wearing out YET!!

I told the Doc, ( who was about the same age as my oldest CHILD), that if someone cut off a leg or arm, I would survive, and thrive. but if my EYES were gone, EVERYTHING about my world would change!

I had a similar conversation with a man that had been blind since birth about 4 years ago. He asked me" which of my sences could i do without the most"?

I told him, " anything but sight". 3 days later, I was rushed to the emergency room with an 'optic' ( whatever the problem was) thing, that shut me down for a MONTH!!

The entire center of my vision looked like I was looking through water, and the outline of 'invisible' birds were flying through the area that USED to be populated by 'what was actually there'

It was called (spelling not a factor) Optic- nuralgia, or something close.
an infection in the optic nerve that shot the center of my visionand the only treetment was , either waiting it out, or an 'inpatient, steroide drip for 30 days' ( I waited) it went away.....

Has any of you youngsters ever experienced any of this crap???

I had a SK Breaker bar break (the pin in the head broke) under load, and the pin shot out and hit me right in the left pupil ...hurt like nothing I'd ever felt, instantly lost total vision in that eye....thought is was gone for good, but initially was internal bleeding in my eye, and the blood clouded the fluid and kept light from getting through....after several days, the blood cleared out, but left me with vision like looking trough wax paper in that eye...the pin had caused a "Trauma Induced Cataract" in my left eye…
SO I ended up having to have the lens in my eye cut out, and replaced with a false lens.
Now I can see out of it, but it is like a cheap camera, and it is a fixed lens, and doesn’t focus…it is set to see distant, so everything up close is a blur out of it, but does great for most things, and I read with my other eye

So I went from better than perfect vision, to blind in one eye to “OK” vision during that year…..so I’d have to agree, sight is the sense that I’d most miss if taken away completely.
Before that happened to me, I hardly ever thought about how important sight is…

Safety Glasses…wear them

I wore mild prescription glasses for years but when things started getting blurry I went for a new presciption. They said I had cateracts and referred me to an eye surgeon. Had both lenses replaced, fortunately one at a time. Not only could I see without glasses, every color was brighter and white wasn't yellow. He said it was from the bright Florida sun. Always wear sun glasses. I thought a lot about sight and not being able to drive and enjoy the world. I'll keep all 7 senses if the Lord is willing.

My formerly alive cat actually clawed me across the face over my left eye once, and within about 30 seconds all I could see out of that eye was a single shade of grey, sort of like primer. It cleared in about 5 minutes, but that was probably the most terrifying thing that has ever happened to me. I'm a pilot, so I'm VERY protective of my eyes. I always wear sunglasses, never work with power tools without eye protection, all that fun stuff. Sight isn't something I fool around with.

Well after having 409 sprayed in my right eye in high school(got in a fight over it) and was blinded by that stuff for over 2 weeks. Also my sense of taste and smell were gone for a month after a radiator blew up in my face-all I could taste or smell was antifreeze and numerous other explosions not all my fault I can still see, smell, taste, walk and breathe. I also had 3 motorcycle wrecks with no broken bones...................yet.

Interestingly enough I've been thinking about this myself. A couple of months ago I went to an optomitrist who then sent me to an opthamalogist because he was afraid I might be developing glaucoma.

The tests came back negative, but the opthamalogist says that I looked suspect for future development and I should continue to have it checked on, so no medicinal marijuana for me.

Anyway, I think a harder question would be what sense could you not do without? After worrying about my possible future loss of vision, I've decided that the one sense I could not do without would be my hearing (well I suppose I could live without it, but you get the point).

That's horrible to hear Jerry. I'll be praying for you and I hope they can fix you up soon. I could never go without sight, But I think I could do without smell(I basically don't have it anyway)

'cuz no matter WHAT happens in life, if ya cant smile about it somewhere somehow, you'll just kill yerself......

as for the actual physical senses........

if i lost my vision i would have a hard time......EVERYTHING i do/am revolves around good eyesight.......

and i enjoy my children's laughter.....
so hearing would have to stay...
but i dont enjoy their poopy bums!!
lol

so maybe smell wouldnt be a HUUUGE traagedy to lose....
then again..fresh bread/coffee/cut grass
my wifes perfume
sighhhhhhhhh
i could live without i guess..but it'd take a while to be able to joke about it !!

If any of you ever experience a symptom whereby it appears as if an opaque blind has been drawn over part of one eye, get to a genuine eye specialist QUICKLY. A detached retina is the bad news.

I have completely lost the sight in one eye because a doctor made a wrong diagnosis, resulting in delay before an operation was attempted. The borderline is 24/36 hours.

Agreed!! A sence of humour WILL carry you through many nasty situations, so I guess we actually have 8?

The detatched retina was everyones first guess, that's why the 1 hour 'lag time' for the appointment. The only problem was that I had the bathroom floor tore out in front of the only working toilet and an 86 year old woman that goes frequently living with us!
I had to throw a temporary floor together, check the oil in the Outback, ( I wanted to be sure it was full because I knew that it was about to get abused severly), get to the bank to get $$$ and drive 76 miles. ( I was 25 minutes late)

I arived with cobwebs in my hair, plaster and sawdust on my clothes, but no-one seemed to care.

I have a follow up appointment in 3 weeks, ( unless somethin' else FUBAR'S)

I got my brand new BI FOCALS today!! I can actually see what's in front of me! I still have the 'cloudy' thing going on in the right eye and the Dr(s) said that the brain will 'turn that off' in a few weeks.

I am still 'high steppin'' to get over painted lines, but feel that I am adjusting to getting old rather well..

The 'spots' have gone away, I have not seen a 1/4 moon crescent for about a week, flashing to the right, but the really big 'floater' is still being a pain. I checked out at 20/20 corrected, even with the 'extras'..

I just might live through this!

Thanks for caring! I will give you 'insight' to what it is like to get older..

The wife says that I try to be Superman and that I put too many things on my plate. She is probibly RIGHT! I do try to push the envelope as to what I try to do. That is only because I DO more accidentally than MOST people do on a good day. 99 gallons of paint on the wall, 99 gallons of paint..

Do you have any idea how much BEER it takes to smear 99 gallons of latex exterior paint in 10 months???

I have NO idea who won the fight, the baseball game, the football game or the Winston cup, errr the NEXTELL cup, ( yea, I DO remember that the tobacco companies are out of NASCAR now)

I guess I will sign off and go have a smoke....

God Bless.

Trevor, I used to have a pen pal in your city about 20 years ago. His name was Neil McGlaughlin.. Could you search the 'hood' and see if you could find anything?? I still have an envelope that I was getting ready to send to him when he fell from the earth.

I met him through the readers letters section of 'Street Scene' magazine, ( put out by National Street Rod Association, ( NSRA)
