Try holding the gas pedal down halfway then crank it. If it still does not start after 5 seconds, floor the gas pedal and let it crank for another 5-10 seconds. It it starts, let off the gas immediately. If it doesn't start, try a couple of more times with the pedal floored. If it still doesn't start at this point, then it has some more serious issues.

The engine will eventually throw a code. The code will more than likely tell you why it's not starting.
Most common are errors for the Engine Temp Sensor and crank/cam sensors. Check http://svx-iw.com or the howto locker on how to get the codes.

That's the symptoms of a failing engine temperature sensor.

how much are them and how hard are they to put in? would that cause it not to start?

According to subaruparts.com the part number is 22630AA041 and it costs $20.54. Replacing it is easy.

When mine failed it would only start after cranking for a while. If I touched the gas pedal it would kill the engine. Imagine starting a carbed car with no choke and unable to pump the gas.

I would try the hard start procedure before assuming any part failure. Some SVXs are simply hard to start in cool moist climates, yet runs fine otherwise. Certainly there mut be somethings that aren't operating as well as when they were new, but not necessarily anything to be immediately concerned about.

well it is cool and wet from all the snow. so maybe that is just the problem. and the batterie was dead for a few days so a new bat and hopefully it will start.

A bad TPS or TPS that is not adjusted correctly will also cause a hard start. Holding the gas pedal down may get it to start if it's just a bad adjustment.

Now, I bet almost everything that I own that you have either a failed Cam or Crank sensor. I had a similar problem with mine where It would barely start and when it did start run like crap. It turned out to be the Cam sensor on the driver side of the engine. There are 3 sensors......2 for the crank and 1 for the cam. One of the cam and crank sensors is the same part number and the other crank sensor is a different part number. Try that....They are not cheap though and I ordered mine from www.subaruparts.com. |

Just give me your address and I'll be over to collect your things!
Actually, if you search the old Yahoo archives, you'll see that I and a few others have had hard start problems ever since 2000-01. All of my main sensors are working fine and the car runs perfectly once started. It's getting it started in moist cool weather that's the problem. There are several hypothesis ranging to expensive leaky injectors to something simple and cheap to fix like a dirty IAC valve. It has not been a big enough of a bother to me at this point to chase it down since I live in an apartment and they don't appreciate engine teardowns in the parking lot. KuoH Quote:
