HORRIBLE Motor Ticking after long sit.
When I start my SVX I hear a constant loud TICK TICK TICK coming from under the intake. It is not the plugs, and not coming from a side of the motor. Car sat from Feb till about three weeks ago. I start it weekly now, but it developed a gasket leak on the driver's side. Has brand new oil and filter. Checked oil and it does not leak while it sits. Help please! The clicking sounds awful and does not go away after the car warms up!

See if it's louder when you listen at the side under the car behind the front wheel. It could be the flex-plate.

im sure 6 months of no use would make for bad hydrolic lash adjusters, mine sounded like crap when they sat for 19 days. It went away after a couple days when the air finally got out. You can bleed em if you want, or just wait for it to semi correct itself. Least that's my guess.

Only leaks oil when running and ticking (Lifters) could be a bad seal on the oil pump....this would cause a leak when it was running, and allow air to get into the oil while being pressurized causing it to froth up, and make your lifters tick....
My thoughts on it....but diagnosing over the internet is hard to do...

Hmmmm
Would it be easier if anyone with some garage know-how and a broadband connection if I take a short video of it? The ticking comes from the top center of the motor, immediately under the intake. It does not come from either side. I may try to obtain a steth and determine a pinpoint. Question about leak- Is the oil pump located to one side of the motor? I noticed that the smoking comes from under the driver's side of the motor, in the center. And FYI- Oil Pump was replaced 2 years ago by Subaru of Nashua, NH.

The Oil pump is really in the center of the motor, but the timing belt could spread an oil leak to one side or another...and let it leak out of the T-Belt covers...

The oil pump's up front and center. Smoking could be engine oil dripping onto the exhaust from a leaky cam cover gasket, or ATF from the lines that run to and from the radiator/cooler.
With the entire valvetrain located at the east/west extremes, a loud tick from beneath the intake can't be a good thing. I've never had the flexplate problem many have described here, but I think if I were you, I'd explore that possibility a bit further. dcb |

take off the valve covers, pull out the HLA's, dunk em in oil, and squeeze the air out of them. I'm sure there's a more indepth method to that though .

I've heard of someone putting ATF in their engine, going for a brief agressive drive then changing the oil again.
The ATF is supposed to clean out the system.
