Spark Plugs?

First, allow me to preface this post by stating that the following is what I would assume to be an elementary question. Please do not look down on me for my ignorance......

What do spark plugs do? I realize they provide the 'spark' to ignite the fuel (i think), but do they only spark once when the key is turned? Or perhaps they continually spark? I truly appreciate any information.

Thank you all for your time.

They are timed to your engine fuel injection system and only spark when the engine is running. They do not spark when it is on ACC or on OFF. They rotate the spark sequence as in 1-3-5-2-4-6 etc.

Someone else?

Thank you for your response, Seraph. So the different plugs spark on a continuous, but varying, basis up until the point the engine is turned off?

They only spark at an exact certain time, usually right when the piston has reached top dead center (All the way up). Of course.....they only spark every other time the piston is at TDC, since car engines are usually 4 stroke (suck squeeze bang blow)

Actually, they spark a little before top dead center so that when the fuel/air mixture is exploding, there is maximum force pushing the piston down. If it sparks at top dead center, by the time the mixture explodes and expands, the piston is already traveling down and you lose some of the effect.
