I have a pan mounted temp gauge. I guess you read my posts like you read your owners manual. Its a very realistic figure as above 170 you start to break down the fluid much much faster.

Even 165 is too high to open it up in the summer unless you like toasted trannies for dinner!

granted you have to consider the source of this chart - but I'm with benebob. 180 to start cooling is too hot.
