Any experienced Firefox users out there?

I've been a long-time fan of Opera, but my school has made some "upgrades" to its mail server and Opera is no longer supported (I could rant for a while on this, but that's not my concern at the moment...)

Since I really am not a fan of IE, I decided to go with Firefox. Unfortunately Firefox does not seem to like my 5-button mouse, so my 'back' and 'forward' buttons don't work. I can't seem to find any information on how to add 5-button support, does anyone know?

I have been using my Microsoft Intellipoint Optical mouse with Firefox for awhile now without a problem, only thing I can remember doing different is setting the extra two buttons as Shift Forward and Back rather than default, but since I had to re-install Windows XP that has disapeared but it still works.

By chance are you running it on a Linux OS because if so here is how you can fix it, seems its going to require you to replace a line of text in software's code and some key commands to restart Firefox.

Yeah, is windows recognizing your mouse as a 5 button mouse? Because there are generic commands built into firefox that not every mouse/keyboard has but will still be recognized.

ie. my laptop keyboard has backwards/forwards buttons and they work.

Hm I've never even used my Intellimouse forward and back mouse buttons in Firefox. Or maybe I did and it worked. If it didn't I would remember.

If I hadn't sent out my defective RAM to returns I could tell you ):

I know this older version on this laptop supports my 4 button trackball nav buttons. I hit them on accident all the time. :/

You shouldn't have to tweak anything. Check to see if your mouse drivers are up to date.

I was able to get the back button to work by setting it to backspace instead of default (thanks for the idea weebitob), but unfortunately I can't use more than a one key command so forward is out.

I also downloaded the mouse gestures extension, so I'm pretty much set.
